I was in Port O'Conner for a few days and while driving around looking for real estate deals, I noticed a lot of houses had piles of palm branches. I needed some to finish the roof on the ducktoon. So I stopped and asked a guy if I could have them. With a strange look he answered with "uh, yeah". I reckon the residents plan on trimming their palms the week before season knowing the hunters will haul them off.

As I was being careful of the thorns a truck driove up. He was a POC resident as well. He told me I didn't want those palms that he had Queen palms and to come get them.

I have never heard of them. They don't have thorns and they have long streaming leaves. So I snatched up some of them too. Great coverage and no thorns. I like that.

I learned a good trick for the thorns. I unloaded the truck and piled up the palms with thorns. I used a grinder and ground down the thorns. It takes about 20 seconds per branch. I like having the limb still on so to make it easier to wire it into the blind. Getting rid of the thorns made it so much easier to deal with installation.

It wouldn't take many fronds from the large palms in our yard to cover a blind. We trim often enough, it wouldn't take long to get enough to cover a good sized blind.

Serval varieties in the yard, not including banana palms (technically not a palm)

Them thorns are hell on the hands.. And if the waders so much as catch a glimpse they immediately fill up with water! bang

I tell you, running that grinder down both sides is the shizzle. It just east up the thorns in seconds.

Gloves are a must handling them.

There are better saws for this, but I just put this cheap saw in a vice, and just cut all the thorns off in one priece to discard...

Put them on my blind like shingles....
