I have a 2009 GMC Sierra SLT 4X4. The check engine light has been going on and off for the last month or so, for longer periods of time each time, and now it's stuck on. Scanned the code and got P0449 which is an Evaporative Emission Vent Valve Solenoid Malfunction. Apparently it's a pretty common error code. Have any of you ever dealt with this? If so, did you replace the evap canister and filter, or just the Canister? I found canister by itself on ebay for $25 (AC Delco). At Autozone they have the kit with the canister and filter for $82.99. Should I spend the extra money replacing both? Is there anything else that could be causing a p0449 code?

Go do a search on YouTube for the code and you'll see several examples. I did it on my '09 Avalanche and the part(off Amazon) came with hose and all. I wouldn't try replacing individual components.

Too far from me, unless you are going to be in North Texas at some point soon. Like stated above Google is your friend.

Evaporative Emission Vent Valve Solenoid Malfunction. Just a shot in the dark, but I'd try a new gas cap first. Might not even have to buy one. Do you have a buddy who'd let you borrow his? Disconnect the negative battery cable for a few minutes to clear the code and take it for a drive to see whether or not the code re-sets. Just a thought and like I said, just a shot in the dark.

you might just have some crap gasoline. my elderly mother's car doesn't get much road time anymore, and her check engine light came on not too long ago after it was filled with gas. i just refilled it a week ago and it went off of it's own accord a day after the fresh gas and about 40 highway miles

Slow Drifter gave you some excellent advice. Replacement of the gas cap (with a quality, not autozone) cap is step one.

Hate to burst bubbles, but the code is pretty specific to a failing component, not a "system" problem. The days of generic Evap system issues which generally was a gas cap problem have long passed. It's not the gas cap and it's not bad gas.

Doubt bucees in NB has bad gas.. pretty sure that's not the case. The research I've done says it's the evap canister (p0449 code), my question is if I should pay $20 to replace the canister only, or 70+ to replace the canister and filter (code for filter being blocked is p0466).

Charlie It is a specific code but, a loose or failed gas cap can cause this code.

The vent solenoid needs to be replaced. Very common problem. It is located where the elements of the road will affect it. GM has a svc bulletin to replace the sol and run a 5/8 heater hose up above the transmission for the vent filter. Its possible that was done during your first visit if so jus install the new solenoid.
