if you weren't going to buy turtle skin, what would be your choice?

I had some (not sure what brand they were but prob kevlar) and they were so hot to wear that I'd rather take my chances on the snake bite. It was pure misery to wear those hot things.

there's a choice of watching where you walk
or reach with your hands, or wearing some hot
uncomfortable snake boots or gaiters. the discomfort
is surely less than laying up in a bed in the
hospital with your leg swelled up twice it's
size, or maybe having some dead tissue cut away
or losing a toe or five, maybe even heart
problems or a stroke.

I agree

Been wearing these for several years. They make good brush guards too. They are warm and clunky.

Why the aversion to Turtle Skins?

We've had several sets similar to these with the bronze mesh over the years. Ranger_Canvas_Snake_Gaiters_Leggings

The mesh ones work fine, but I really am sold on the Turtle Skins Iíve had for several years now.

Colt, I own a pair of the waist high turtle skins and they are my go to on the lease when not hiking a lot. I bought some "snake guardz" for my aoudad hunt to hike in. My size measures to be a medium and they ended not being big enough to wrap around the ankle portion of my boot very well. There is also not any strap that goes underneath the sole of the boot to prevent them from rising up. The worse thing however is there straps. They simply come loose nearly with every step which causes them to loosen enough that your back of your leg is exposed. If they would change the straps and put a sole strap in they would be the gaiters to buy. As is, however, they are worthless.
