I'm curious about opinions on whether or not to have a rail mounted weapon light. Personally, I have always thought it just gave the bad guy a target. Now I'm wondering if they are so bright that the bad guy would have a hard time aiming unless he was wearing super dark sunglasses, in the dark, (sarcasm).
I have always figured, regardless of any topic, use what the pros use. It appears that all the LEOs use them.
I don't know much about the lumens thing, but have also read that some of the lumen claims are not accurate. The Streamlight TLR-1 HL(high lumen), claims 630 lumens. One review I read said that was too bright for in the home, which I don't believe.
Anyway, light or no light? Does that make you a target? I almost think that in the house to go with the light, but outside, maybe not. A distant bad guy could nail you.
What do y'all think?

I will say for the home go with the light or make sure you have a light near by. 200 lumen is very bright

Streamlights are very bright for their size. Can see animal eyes at 200 yards, bright.
As far as making you a target, shining the light should be immediatly prior to squeezing the trigger. I.D. what (who) you're looking at and get to it.

The TLR-1 HL is very bright, especially for its size. I stuck one on my .45 one night when we went out driving around the ranch spotlighting for pigs. We had an old 12v plug in incandescent spot light. About half way around the ranch, I flipped on the Streamlight. It was much brighter than the old spot light. We ended up using that most of the way back to the house. For indoor use, the HL will blind whomever you light up with it and might blind you.
It is far more important to be able to hit the target than it is to haggle over who makes a weapon or who pulls a trigger.

Use a strobe light that tends to confuse the bad guy for a few crucial seconds. Practice using it a bit so that you won't be confused, just the bad guy.
Use a shotgun. Aim for the chin for a quick kill that defeats any body armor.

I have a TLR-1 HL and it is extremely bright. I figure in a home defense setting, you'll need a light anyway to get positive ID of your target, so you might as well mount it on your weapon and free up a hand.
Highly recommend the TLR-1 HL; easy to use, very bright, has strobe, lightweight, and at $120 you get a lot of bang for your buck.

I like the gun-mounted light because as 09 said, it frees up a hand. It also points where you're pointing the gun, another nice feature.

Been using them since 2006. Last year I upgraded my TLR-1 to the TLR-1HL, and after about 5 uses went back to my original. It is way to bright for use in houses as it reflects off the walls and makes you squint. Outdoors it's great, and that's where it gets used now. A weapon light doesn't necessarily make you a target, yes it gives a general position, but try having a friend hold the light on one side of your house with you on the other and see how hard it is to spot there actual location. Most people can't stand looking in the direction of the TLR-1 while its pointed at them, much less the HL. If proper light discipline is used, then it's as great a tool as any.

I think they are great tools. If I was in an unfamiliar place I would think it would have value. I have chosen not to use one on my home pistol. I know where I am and can see well enough at night and want to be as invisible as I can be. I have a laser on another pistol and have thought about getting a light for one just not sure how much I would use it. Still it cant be a bad thing if it makes you more comfortable.

I have a TLR-1HL on the way. I hope it isn't too bright. If it is I will just use it for a flashlight. I needed a small, but good bright flashlight for business use anyway. Thanks for the feedback!

If you mean you will use it for a handheld flashlight, that might not be the best idea. It's not comfortable to hold and it gets pretty hot after it's been on for a while.

Does it get too hot to even hold it near the back end? Actually, if and when I might use it for a flashlight it might only be on for maybe a minute or so. Recently I was buying a spec property and wanted to really examine the attic. The best flashlight I had wouldn't cut it. I ended up with an extension cord and a big halogen light just so I could really check it out. I decided right there and then that a good light such as this Streamlight would really come in handy. And, those cases will be rare. And for that matter I guess I could take gloves, or a potholder. Really, could you hold it near the back and use it for a flashlight?
