I think the real question should be- which will kill the deer deader? popcorn

I would not hesitate to take a deer or pig from 300-400 yards with a 300 blk out (supersonic load). I know my holds and know where the bullet will be. Sure, is a higher power rifle maybe a better option, sure. But the 300 blk out is more than capable if you know your come-ups and can make a good shot, especially over a 223.

On the 125 yards comment- I'll let you go stand in front of the round at 126 yards while I'm shooting a 125 grain Ballistic Tip and you can tell me how it does! SMFH (Out of a 16" bolt gun, my 125's are doing 2350 fps at the muzzle. At 125 yards, the round retains 1193 ft lbs of energy. From a 100 yard zero, it's only dropped 3/4" at 125 yards, so how difficult is that shot?)

I used the 125 mark as a point I felt I could maintain the 900+ energy level. It was not a challenge, nor did I say someone could not kill past the 125 mark. It had nothing to do with drop or fps or anything else. My last deer kill was with a .300 BO, it was at 52 yards. I shoot 130's and it did a great job. My grandson will be hunting with the same rifle next week, longest shot - 115 yds. Not sure where the conflict is at, but I hope you have a better day.

There's no conflict, I'm sorry if it went off that way.

I was simply replying to your post of the blk out effective beyond 125 yards. Your post implied that after 125 yards the blk out is not effective. I'm simply stating that is far from the case. It is very effective, and well beyond the 125 yard mark, is all I'm saying. You see posts that imply something, and to the uninformed, may seem logical.

This. I shoot a 22-250. Have shot deer from 30/40yd all the way to maybe a lil past 200yd. Mostly neck shots. One shoulder/lung/diaphram shot on a huge axis doe at 200 (my farthest) with a 55gr VMAX and she piled up. No blood, but not that far away (<100yd).

Uncle has a 223 that he's killed many a WT buck with. 55grners to the heart, 4 pieces. Still ran about a 100yd, but ample blood. Dunno what bullet that was, though.

Go for neck shots up to 200yd with the 223. You'll be fine.

On the other hand, I have no experience with the 300 Blackout. grin

If I think I'm going to be shooting past 150 or so at a deer I'll usually take my 7x57.

This. I only have experience with the .223. My wife was using 69 gr federal fusions last year in an ar with a 20 inch barrel. She took a spike with it in the shoulder. Dropped him in his tracks but didn't pass through and the bullet fragmented so badly that she ended up with a gut shot deer. Now she may have had better luck with a different bullet but I decided not to chance it and she used a .243 for the rest of the season. I would say go with the heavier 300 bo.

Well first of all, i have no use with the 300, heard good and bad about it, guess depends on your bullet
placement there. But the .223 has my vote, been my fav for a while, in both AR and bolt action platforms.
I load here, 55grn Nosler Ballistic tips, lower ear or neck shot, high on neck, that way ruinsless meat for
our chili here!

Like previous posts said anything beyond 200+ yds out, i would bump up my size of caliber....

My thoughts on this rainy friday in the hill country....

gud luck, hunt safe.....

I want to check out some targets for the 200 yard neck shot groups. From a bench I believe it, in hunting conditions, im not saying it is imposible, but I don't think the vast majority of shooters have the skill to RELIABLY pull that off. I for one do not.
