I purchased some hornady gmx for a 270. Are there any reviews or opinions on this ammo for white tails?

Should I take this as a sign that no one uses them?

What grain?

I have used them in a couple calibers. I don't personally care for them. Like any other mono metal bullet, they need to be run in light for caliber and fast as you can make them go to work well IMHO.

If you don't shoot to hit heavy bone, like shooting through the shoulders to break the animal down, I would select a different bullet. I have had them work fine behind the shoulders and have had them poke a pin hole through with little to no expansion and leave a long faint blood trail.

I use them in select rifles intended for specific animals. They are great at penetrating thru bone and tough skinned game, but leave little for expansion or dumping energy, hydrostatic shock. Also, ive found that they can be finicky to load especially if your on the edge of twist for that grain weight. Take a look at a ballistic tip of same gr weight and notice substantial difference and length and ogive. With gmx type bullets twist AND bullet length needs to be factored in choosing right grain. I have a 1-12 243 ai and can stabilize most 80gr pills with ease and they shoot lights out. Bought 2 boxes of gmx 80gr and wouldnt even group and key holed. So ive had to drop down in gr wt for a couple rifles ive loaded for when ppl had to run gmx.

I've used the .243 80 grain GMX out of a 6mm Remington at just under 3400 fps to shoot a couple animals and it was very effective. FWIW, I had no problems making the bullet group well in my rifle, but that's just the luck of the draw. As others have said, if you go mono-metal, push them fast; aiming at bone doesn't hurt either.

This is why I came to this site to ask the question. I have read so much mixed information. I'm getting mixed info here also. I guess I'm going to have to just shoot them and see.
I purchased 130 grain 270. I'm going to shoot out of a xbolt. I'm Ashamed to say that I don't know the twist on it.
I got these because I don't like ballistic tips. I want the option to make a shoulder shot if I need to.
I guess the worst case scenario I'll use them on hogs.

I haven't shot the GMX but I've run the Barnes tsx, which is another solid copper bullet, through my .308. I haven't put it in a lot of critters but everything has died very rapidly.

Standard twist for 270 win is 1-10". The 130 gmx should stabilize just fine. Load it just a hair off the lands and like said before start middle of the charge weights and dont be surprised if they group well pushing them on the faster side. Its a fantastic bullet for what it was designed for, which imo is anchoring an animal bustin both shoulders or tx heart shot not neck shots.

I have used the 130gr GMX Superformance in .270win for whitetail and the only complaint I have about the bullet is that its a little too tough for my liking.

Kinda like the failsafe bullet, they are meant to penetrate and really push through.

You need to give this bullet plenty of resistance to fully expand; so my advice would be to put it right in the middle of the shoulder blade to get it to open up before it hits the vitals.

I've never shot the Hornady GMX but I have load/shot the Barnes TSX and TTSX bullets in my .243. I also tried Nosler's E-tip bullets.

The accuracy was not terrible for the Barnes bullets, 1 MOA at 100 yards, good for hunting in my opinion. I could not get the Nosler E-tips to shoot under an inch at 100 no mater what I tried.

I now load/shoot Bergers out of my .243 and I have shot half MOA groups or tighter easily. I don't doubt copper bullets killing ability at all, my biggest gripe was loading them. I really had to play with seating depth for them to shoot right. I went through almost 100 Barnes bullets to get a 1 inch group and since these bullets are so expensive that adds up. the E-tips I burned a whole box and never got close to 1 inch.

Also, you have to clean your barrel more frequently because of the copper fouling. The Barnes bullets were not too bad, I would clean every 100 rounds but the Noslers really fouled up the barrel.

I wouldn't use copper bullets unless I had to, especially on white tail. Sure, they have their place, but I am more of a believer in dumping the energy in the animal with a rapidly expanding bullet instead of a copper round that zooms straight through.

I think I paid to much money for some real good hog bullets!!
Oh well it will be fun to bust some shoulders on hogs. I usually avoid this area.
Not anymore.

I've shot 2 pigs yesterday, and two this morning with this ammo. I shot all high shoulder. None of them dropped immediately or really looked they they got hit hard. I expected this ammo to rock them. I'm going to move on to a different bullet.

Shoot them in the dark red circle at the link above and they will drop in their tracks.
