I'm taking my son (11yr old) on either a cow or cull bull hunt in January. I've been soliciting advice from Chad on loads for my 6.5 Creed w/Phantom LT on the front because I know he can handle it. I'd be using the 140gr LRAB from Chad for the hunt to use in the Creed.

My Dad brought up another idea this evening...7x57 with a 160gr - 175gr bullet, which he should be able to handle as well. I plan on keeping shots to 150 yards or less just to stay in his comfort level. I also plan on backing him up with either my 30.06 or buddies .300WM

Which direction would you go?

Seems very hard to go wrong with the 7x57 pushing a 160 grain Nosler Partition. That said, I'd say that shot placement is the key here. Which rifle does the kid like? Use that one.

Either one will do fine with good shot placement.

Be a good time to slowly introduce him to stress situation shooting. Not Police and Military where a person is threatening, just loud sounds, time limits, ect, where he learns to tune out everything and make a clean shot. It will really help when the buck (cow) fever kicks in. Get stable, hold still, exhale, slow steady pressure on the trigger, follow through. Nothing to it...

I'd use the creed all day long with a 129 ABLR or 130 VLD.

I can attest to the 168gr Berger Hunter 7mm bullet doing very well on elk. I am shooting them from a 280 Remington but not that much faster than the 7X57mm. I think the 6.5 will be fine as well with the right bullet.
Shot these a week ago Saturday

Either will do well...I like heavy for caliber and both bullets you are talking about are. The 7x57 is a wonderful round. I watched a good friend of mine take a very big eland with a "little 7x57" and a 175 grain pill.. Dropped that big animal like a sac of taters... I think someone else said it....shot placement!!!

I'd say let the kid decide. Whichever he can shoot better at a maximum distance, and is more comfortable with.

I'd shoot the Mauser, but that's because I have experience with that and not with the 6.5. My cup, not yours. wink
up Good luck.
