My wife is wanting to get a 308 auto for hog hunting but she does not want an AR style as they are a bit heavy for her. We were looking at the Remington 750 and the browning BAR in Safari model

I sure would appreciate some feedback if any of you have used one etc. She will scope it with a green light on top at this point.

The BAR safari model in 308 weighs 7 lb 14 oz.

The Short-trac model in 308 weighs 6 lb 10 oz.

If you are wanting a lighter 308, the BAR Short-trac would be the way to go. By the time you add a scope, the safari is not going to be much lighter than an AR.

The Remingtons are sometimes a good gun, but you hear a lot about quality issues, and feeding/ejection issues.

I'd skip the Remington and choose from the BAR models.

Another route to consider is an AR15 in 6.5 Grendel or 6.8SPC as both can be had in light weight rifles and are quite effective on hogs an deer with less recoil than the 308

Between the two I would pick the BAR hands down every time......I just think the quality of the BAR over the 750 speaks volumes.

This or the 300 Black Out. The BAR rifles I have shot were very poor shooters.

She has been shooting lately a TC single shot in 300 blackout but she wants more shots and she wants a 308. She taken them before with an old bolt gun in 308 but we keep having big groups of hogs and she wants to make 4-5 shots per group but she does not want an AR style. She has one of those in 223 that's she used in the past as well and it is good on head shots for her. The Dang woman gets expensive keeping her in guns.
I looked up Ruger but did not see anything and looked up Bennelli and it did not show anything either.

I have a Short-trac and am very happy with it. My previous experience with Remington autos has been very negative.

The only BAR I've experience with was a jamming machine, two smiths couldn't sort it out but that was a much older model. Of the two I'd likely pick the Browning.

BUT I finally got to shoot my 6.8 SPC Saturday with the suppressor, OH MAN. This is going to be a killing machine.

I have many a gun, but the one that kills the most and gets carried the most is a Remington 750 Carbine in 308.

Very compact, decent accuracy 200 and under, and short, compact, low recoil, etc.

Fit's inside the fender width of a honda four wheeler, tremendously reliable and durable.

Come by and try it out sometime.

One of the greatest things about it, is that when slung on your shoulder, the barrel is below head level, never catches a branch.

Have a fnar set up like bar stock wise. Same barreled action slightly different furniture. once i figured out what it liked for reloads its a very accurate rifle. It was picky loading wise, and i was equally stubborn trying to get cfe 223 to work. But once i went to varget its consistently a 3/4 moa gun. Plus its a piston system and gas system is very tunable to run suppressed. I love my ar's, but for a traditional set up and semi a bar is leaps and bounds the best option.

The guys we know at the FHN that I did some design work with told her they were building her a one of a kind 308 as a gift but it is still more than one year [they recently sent a walnut selection] but she wants something now while she waits.

Since you have a really nice 308 coming, have you considered a used Ruger Carbine in 44 mag or 357 mag? They would be light and easy to handle. Plus, they wouldn't take any depreciation if you wanted to sell it after she got her nice FHN. I haven't shot the new Remington 750, but the older woodstock Remington autoloader my dad hunted with kicked like a mule.

Little off topic but if the gun is only going to be used for 8-16 months why not just buy one of the Rem 740 variations. Probably find one that hasn't been fired over 50 times if you look here around DFW. Know you are in Arkansas but .... after you are through you should be able to sell it for the same amount you paid. Wanenmachers is only a couple of weekends away. Have her handle one of the Rem 760 variations. Good pump would probably be almost as quick. Just a thought.

The Browning Short-trac carries very well and is light and well balanced. I'm not an autoloader fan, but I handled one of these a few years ago at Gander Mountain, and was really impressed by the ergonomics. About 18 months later, I found one for a reasonable price and bought it. The trigger is decent without being great and the rifle, with my current hand load, shoots into about 2 1/2 inches at 200 yards, with 160 grain Accubonds. All in all, I'm quite happy with the rifle. I bought it for daytime hog shooting, but then switched to night hunting so I haven't yet used it to light up any hogs. I did shoot a doe with it, and the effect was what you'd expect when a 105 lb doe gets hit by a 7mm WSM at 90 yards.

BAR! My family all have .270s in the BARs... all old models and they never fail

Iv had the Remington in a .270 also... its a nice gun too and a bit slimmer but still no were near the gun the BAR is mainly the performance after several years of abuse.

I had a BAR in 270, and my dad had one in 308. Neither jammed. I handloaded for mine, with IMR4064 and it shot into an inch or less. Great rifle, but it was the old model and it was heavy. Sold it to my brother and went to bolt guns.

I just remembered...I did have a jamming problem when I put on a new scope and rings. Drove me crazy trying to find the cause. Turned out to be one of the mount screws protruded too far into the action and rubbed on the bolt just enough to cause cycle problems.
