I heard and read that feral hogs can be castrated and penned for sometime to get better meat.

While appearing not very complicated to have a boar fixed, will fixing sows be much harder?

Yes, and the effect would not be as beneficial, if at all. So while the process of neutering works on boars to help flavor, spaying does does not produce a beneficial change in sows. Commercial operations do not spay sows to improve meat flavor, but they do castrate.

A lot of folks cut and turn loose barr hogs... they get huge.. as far as meat.. its not worth the time.. just eat sows and I have never in my life herd of fixing a sow.. there is no benefit since they do not produce testosterone

In California, they can get a drivers license and vote without showing ID. bs

It would be a total waste of time to castrate a wild hog. Hogs are usually castrated at 4 days old and there is no way to eliminate the "wild" taste of a big boar. Shoot 50-60 lb. sows instead. I suppose some people eat bigger hogs but I don't.

In the end, it's not the years in your life that count, it's the life in your years.

Hogs are capable of breeding by 5 months of age. Castrating a hog after this time may take a while to get the hormones out. Our domestic hogs are normally castrated at around 18 days of age. Getting the deed done on a larger hog is no fun. I've done them up to about 180lbs. Once they get over 120 pounds of weight you have your hands full hanging onto them by the back legs while the guy with the knife does his work.eek I've always done this awake, but a wild one had better be asleep or locked up first unless it is a little guy.

Female hormones won't bother meat. The old domestic sows get made into hamburger.

Learn to properly age and prepare the meat. The best tasting meat I ever had was an old Boar.

Most of the places I shoot, I come behind Dog Hunters who mark Hogs they catch and then turn them loose so they can catch them again. Most will cut the ear from base to tip with a sharp knife, marking them. Some castrate them and these Hogs are usually larger.

I shot one this year that had been caught and the Douche got creative. Made his ears look like a clover leaf. Had 3 tips on each ear.

Several years ago, my father shot a feral hog in Llano County that had been castrated, either naturally or by intent, either way, the boar weighed in at a little over 450 lbs and had 5 1/2 in tusk. It had a lot of age and did not clean up well, very poor quality meat.

Years ago i hunted on a fellows place near the Llano river, and he trapped some pigs, released the
small sows, but cut the older boars guess young ones too, he had about 4 in a separte pin near his house,
he was fatte

ning them up for sausage down the road. Guess it would work, but to me, ive had little ones, just
about 30 to 40lbs and they all had the typical gamey flavor or taste.

To me a bullet is a cheaper method to castrate them! And yes they have rights! to suppy use with
sustinance on this earth!

hunt safe.......sw.
