It has been incredibly slow on our ranch so far this season. Two weeks ago I was suffering through a morning sit where I had seen absolutely nothing. At 8:40 I decide to pack up and go back to camp and have some breakfast when a nice mature doe showed up…I was in a foul mood….needed some venison in the freezer… Anyway as soon as she gave me a nice 23 yard quartering away shot I settled the pin behind her shoulder and squeezed the release. The arrow hit the spot I had picked and the doe simply spun and fell like she was hit by a slug. It was a quartering away shot so the arrow had lodged in the opposite shoulder and was visible from my tree and I watched it raise slightly and fall twice and heard the gurgling of a double lunged shot deer before it was motionless.

I have been shooting Grim Reaper Razor Tips for three years now and their slogan of “Watch ‘Em Drop” is pretty darn accurate but nothing like that. I’ve had quite a few short recoveries of 20 or 30 yards but a one yard recovery takes the cake.

Other than a spine shot deer what’s the shortest recovery you’ve had with a well placed arrow?

My shortest tracking jobs were both 1 week apart on 2 bucks. Both shots were 18 yards heart/lung shots with a complete pass thru. Both bucks died on the same trail at almost the same spot. That was about 25 yards from where they were shot. Those were both shot with old NAP 3 blade.

30 yards on a whitetail was the shortest and right where she stood on a 60 pound pig (shot her straight down through the spine and heart)

Shot an old Sika doe at 17 yds. in 2011. Complete pass through the heart. She didn't even flinch or blink an eye when the arrow passed through...just started pouring blood out both sides like an open faucet, calmly took 4 steps forward, pitched over, and died @ 10 feet from where she was hit. If only they could all go like that...

Spike double lunged with 2 blade bear broadhead on wood shaft. 10 yard shot he jumped 2 times walked back to arrow started the death wabble and fell toward my tree. Recovery 6 steps from tree

I've had several that died within ten yards. Even more that were within 50 yards and within sight when they went down.

Spinned my buck last year. It dropped where I hit it. Perfect shot if you ask me. I pretty much dropped a doe year before last that was heart shot. All with Grim Reapers "Watch'em Drop".

Last year was my shortest tracking job. I thought I had hit him a little to high because when the arrow whacked him I saw a little blood slightly higher than I wanted. He took one bunny hop then jumped a small Cedar and that was that. He never ran and all I heard was some rocks move a little so I figured he was walking off down the trail never to be seen again. I gave him 30 minutes and told myself all I was going to do was just go find my arrow and see what kind of blood I had. When I crawled out of the ground blind and stood up I didn't even have to go find my arrow because he was laying right on the other side of the Cedar he jumped not 20 yards from where I put an arrow in him. Talk about going from the lowest of lows to the highest of highs in a matter of seconds!

I was able to shoot a doe with my compound approx. 15 yards from the side of the sendero while walking back to my truck from the morning hunt.. I saw her cross the road.. walked quietly to the trail edge and there she stood, 15 yards. I made a frontal shot, which is probably one that should never be taken, but I was confident that I could make the shot. I hit her center chest and she flipped completely up and backwards landing on her side and never got up... did one followup shot and that was my shortest and right next to the road. Saw nothing the whole morning sit until i walked to my truck.

Sweet deal. Haven't had a super short tracking job yet, mine have been average.

Shot a doe at 15yds, ran 5yds tried to jump through a oak that split a few feet up. Got stuck between the oak and expired with all feet off the ground.

I shot a buck one year on a very foggy morning. He runs off, I can't see because of the heavy fog and two mintues later he returns and dies at the base of my tree. I was on the phone with my buddy requesting help tracking when he returned and died. I was then telling my friend cancel that request and bring the truck he's down. hehe

Mine would be -24 yards. I shot a doe at 24 yards and she ran right at the tree and died against it so -24 blood trail.

Ah the cross we bear as bow hunters. Whether you think you made a good, marginal or bad stick..unless you see the animal go down in sight, that next 30-40 minutes sitting in the tree is the most gut wrenching, self doubt filled time of your life! You spend all summer long drilling golf ball size qroups and then at the moment of truth you think you're a few inches off your mark...It's one hell of a roller coaster ride for sure but definitely a big part of what we do. The exhilaration finding your deer at the end of a blood trail whether it’s 30 yards or 300 yards is unmatched!

Shot an 8 pt buck with my crossbow at 16 yards. He took off running through the brush. I climbed down and started to track the blood. I followed it for about 60 yards at which the buck piled up 10 feet from the tailgate of my truck!
Another buck was shot under my feeder at 18 yards. He took off full speed and at 50 yards he hit the fence and flipped head over heals and hit the ground. Jumped back up, again jumped the same fence and came running right back towards the feeder and hit the ground hard about 3 feet from the feeder. Dead!

I had a nice 11 pt 2 years ago that tried to duck my arrow at 47 yrds and it hit him in the spine and hit an artery he dropped in his tracks and died.

I have only shot 3 animals with my bow so far. A double lunged doe that went 25-30 yards and I watched her the whole time and saw her drop. A pig with a shot through the shoulders that I watched go down about in 30 yards and the last one was a pig that I heart shot and it was the longest track of about 100 yards. That track was easy to follow since there was solid blood trail the whole while. The funny thing about her was she ran through the nastiest, thickest briars and it took me about 30 minutes to get through that nasty stuff too her and she died about 5 yards from the road...if I would have gone to get my truck before tracking her I would have walked right to her instead of getting shredded by all of the thorns tracking her.

All 3 animals were sho with Rage Titanium 2 blade broadheads.

I spined a doe on a landlocked peice of public land once. I dug a pit blind to get it done. She went 1 ft! Lol

Years back, my father shot a spike buck with a .3006 rifle. He just clipped the lower belly causing the intestines to come out while it was running away. He got out of the blind, went to the site and followed a long strand of small intestine through the brush for about 45 yards to where the buck was dead. Almost all of its inside were spilled out, so basically he did'nt have to gut it!

This is a perfect description! For me about 20 yds is the shortest.

Ten yards using 100 grain muzzy on a hog. Came in right under my treestand and my sight picture was straight down and looking at hogs back on all pins. Who could miss such a chip shot? Hog went about ten yards into some brush and bled out.
