Wasn't sure where to put this. I'm 48 and have never worn glasses, although I've probably needed them for a few years. I got myself a Henry Big Boy in .45 for my Birthday. When did they start making front sight posts fuzzy? I think it's time for a trip to the eye doc. Are there any shooting-specific questions I should ask? I shoot primarily with scoped rifles, but will use the .45 open-sighted for pigs. Any tips or tricks, things I should know about, from y'all who wear glasses? Should I bring the rifle to the appointment and have a script just for shooting? (only half-way joking) Any advice on shooting with glasses would be appreciated. About equal mix of range time/hunting, maybe a tad more range.

Nothing I've noticed changes other than I can see better.

Well that's good to know. I guess I should re-sight all my rifles after getting glasses? I'd feel better and it's a good excuse for a couple of range days, but is it necessary?

I doubt you'll have to move anything but yes, it would be a good idea to shoot them once you've got your new eyes.

You may end up adjusting the diopter with refreshed eyes. I wear contacts that correct near sightedness, nothing special is done at the Doc's office for shooting. Do check zeros, but I bet they are fine.

I would pick the best ophthalmologist I could find if it were me. Very likely there is no eye disease but if there is would be good to know it now.

I'm 56 and didn't have to start wearing corrective lenses until my early 40's. I'm nearsighted and have astigmatism. The astigmatism causes me fits.

Shooting iron sights rifle or handgun I do best with glasses.

Shooting a scoped firearm I do best wearing no corrective lens.

With a shotgun I do best wearing contacts.

Thanks all for the information! I'll go get my new eyes and reserve some range time just for peace of mind. I think I have a pretty decent ophthalmologist picked out. She diagnosed my brother-in-law with diabetes with a routine eye exam. I have no idea how that works but BIL went to his PCP and sure enough, he was early stage diabetic.

That all makes perfect sense. I shoot a scoped rifle both eyes open, so I'll likely do better wearing glasses. Iron sights and handgun, as long as I can get a sharp front sight post I'm good. I may try shotgun with glasses or nothing because I don't want to deal with contacts.

Sounds like a good plan sir. I am dealing with vision problems presently as well as 6 years ago. cornea lens transplant partly brought on by Fuchs disease. That is why I suggest the ophthalmologist.

Being nearsighted, I ran into the same problem as I got older. It really became obvious about a year ago when I purchased a lever gun for close-up hunting where I knew a scope would just get in the way. My glasses allow me to see things at longer distances, but I take them off to see clearly when reading. Without my glasses, I can see open sights without a problem. But with my glasses on, iron sights get fuzzy.

My solution was to add a simple and inexpensive Tasco, illuminated red dot sight to my lever gun. I didn't want to spend a lot of money at first because I wasn't sure of the outcome. While it looks a little odd on a lever gun, it has proven very effective and allows me to easily focus on both the red dot and distant aim point without a problem. I even surprised myself hitting 2 inch circles (worst case) with it at 100 yards consistently. That's plenty good for the 50 yard or less shots I'll be making in the woods.

Glasses for seeing up close blurr things at distance, and glasses for distance, blurr things up close. So don't expect glasses to help with iron sights, because with them you need to see clearly up close and at distance simultaneously. A scope or red dot is your best solution...

I prefer wearing contacts over glasses in the field. You dont have to worry about rain or sweat or dirty lenses or fog or whatever. Every time I have worn glasses while hunting I have regretted it.

If you cant see then yes get some type of corrective lenses. Sounds like a "heres your sign" question to me

I had lasik done 6 years ago. Had worn glasses since I was 18 and I am 59 now. Wish I had done it a lot earlier. One eye for close up and one for distance sounded weird but works great.

So you mean the lens of each eye was modified differently from the other?

I've read about this. If they made each eye identical you would have little to no depth perception.


Edited to add: From what I've read, if both eyes are identical you'll have 2D vision, not 3D. People who are blind/missing one eye have the same problem, from what little I've read so far.

Yes they are both different. As far as depth perception, yes it was a chore at first especially just going up and down stairs. The first couple of days were pretty weird. After that I did not see any difference as far as depth perception. The brain can compensate pretty quick with what ever is thrown at it. My depth perception now is as good as anybody else or at least as good as anybody that I work with. Best thing is that I don't have to wear any glasses at all not even to read.
