Anyone have any experience with these?

I have a Savage FCP10-SR and wanting to upgrade the factory plastic stock. After a lot of searching and jaw dropping at the prices of some of these stocks, I found the Boyd's Pro Varmint for $129. For and extra $60 you can get the adjustable cheek piece installed which I think is a great value considering a lot of the Kydex cheek pieces run around that. Boyd's has the Pro Varmint stock in black or green with adjustable cheek piece for $200 shipped. I'm aware I'll probably have to bed the action which I've never done before, but figure I can handle it. Other than that does anyone have any pros/cons with Boyd's stocks? I've been reading a bunch of reviews and they all seem to be good. So if the stock is good to go for $200 I think thats a heck of a steal. Not wanting to spend $400+ on a stock, this is a budget rifle smile

This is the black textured Pro Varmint

I'm also digging this laminate wood "coyote"

This is a Pro Varmint with optionaly adjustable cheek piece.

I like the laminate.

I've had several Boyd's laminates and they are GTG as long as they're bedded correctly.

How stiff is the forearm of the synthetic? Much flex when you load it?

It's not too bad it's the accustock so it has an aluminum bed in it. But looking for something a little more beefy with a higher comb.

For a nice budget build I think you'd be happy with the results. I've been considering a Boyd's thumbhole for a Ruger .223 bolt for fun.

I just recently purchased a Thumbhole stock in Jacaranda for my Tikka T3 and it fit perfect and looks nice also. With that being said I ordered a Thumbhole Stock and a forearm for my TC Encore and they sent me 2 different stocks both with the same problem and needing major modifications to fit, they finally told me that all of the ones on the shelf were wrong and as soon as they got the problem fixed they would send me one I told them no Thanks and made the modifications to the one I had and made it fit.

For $40, from Triad Tactical, you can adjust comb with a stock pack.

Thanks for the replies guys. Thinking I might go ahead and try one out and just get the stock without the adjustment. Jason I already have a PIG Stock Pack with bungees I can build a little more comb up with under it. The Triad was out of stock when I bought this one. Might be a little on the small side for a full size tactical stock compared to a sporter stock.

I highly recommend the HS-Precision for the Savage. No bedding required since it has a similar aluminum chassis as the Accustock, just no flex. I got mine for under $400 this time last year. The Boyd's laminate is going to add some substantial weight

I'd Love a HS Precision stock but ain't no way I'm finding one for even close to this price. Don't really want to spend as much on a stock as I did the rifle itself lol. I'd get a chasis system for that price. The varmint pro isn't to much heavier than the fiberglass stocks and you can actually drill out the butt stock under the recoil pad to shave some weight if needed, but this is for long range bipod pad shooting so weight isn't too much of a concern at the moment.

KRoyal, I've got a Savage benchrest bipod shooter that is on a budget just like yours. I've been considering the Boyds stock for awhile now. Problem I have is that I think I'd have to buy new bottom metal to do it, meaning it's an extra $200 for me. If anyone who answered the phone at Boyd's customer service number knew what they were talking about, I'd have a good idea if it was a $200 upgrade for me or a $400 upgrade, but nobody there has understood my quesiton.

Either way, I'm very interested to see if you get one and how you like it.

I'm going to order the "Pro Varmint Savage 10 TBR Detachable Mag Short Action Factory Barrel Channel Laminate Stock W/Black Textured Paint". From what I can make out on the website the stock is for the newer style Savage rifles with top bolt release and factory detachable bottom metal which mine has. They have blind magazine models as well. I just hope the "Factory Barrel Channel" will fit the barrel of my 10FPC-SR, it is not a bull barrel, but it is not a sporter barrel either looks like a medium couture fluted barrel.

Have you checked out Stockade Gun Stocks? They make stocks specifically for Savage rifles. If you get the money saver version it is $285 I believe.

From the reviews I have read they are great stocks, but I personally do not have experience with them.

Just checked them out, I don't know about spending $285 on a completely unfinished stock. Plus the options begin to add up pretty quick $20 for a third sling swivel?? $150 for comb adjustment? Also I didn't see it, but they said all are inlet for savage blind magazine not for the detachable magazine models I'm sure they would charge a lot more to inlet it for DBM or with the money saver option I'd have to do it myself and I don't have the tools or know how LOL. Thanks for the reply though.

I have an email into Boyd's right now waiting to hear back. As soon as they confirm that my barrel will fit in the factory barrel channel I'm buying the Pro Varmint stock with comb adjustment built in. For $208 shipped its not to try it. I'm sure I could get $130-$150 from my accustock with the SKDTac stock pack on it. We shall see..

KRoyal, I have several Boyd's stocks, including a Pro Varmint in blue/grey/black laminate.I've never had to bed any of my stocks, but I order them unfinished and fit/finish each one myself.
You might take a look at the Choate Tactical stock also. I have 4 of them, and they are great stocks. They are a little over $200.

If the Boyds site says the stock is for a factory contour, it is for a sporter contour barrel. You will have to open up the barrel channel for a varmint contour to fit. And the finish will wear off the black coated stock, I'd buy a colored laminate.

Thanks for the reply, I've had a Choate Super Sniper stock before and didn't like it very much. This was years ago and they could have changed them since, but I wasn't a fan. Thanks for info about the barrel channel Boyd's seems to not really get back to you when you send an email inquiry LOL.

I'll take a look at them, but I'm sure they're out of my price range. I'm normally of the buy once cry once group, but I'm trying to see exactly how cheap I can get out of this gun and still be able to make hits consistently far down range. The Accustock works obviously since I can hit out to 800 with it no problem, but the forearm is not the greatest on barricades, the comb could use some adjustment which I could build up under my stock pack, but I hate the grip. I'm used to gas guns and really like my grip to be a lot more vertical it is more comfortable to me when shooting.

Check out savageshooters.com

A few guys have taken the Accustock and used fiberglass layers of plastic body filled to change the stock to fit their needs. It's a little work, but you build it to fit you and your needs.

That's a good idea, I think I could probably handle that and reprinting isn't a big deal to me done it a few times.

The Choate tactical stock is nothing like the ultimate varminter, it's shaped just like the Boyds you're looking at or the H S Precision.

I'll post some pics when I get off work.

That looks fun, Lol if all else fails I just have to buy another stock anyway.

By the way looked into the Choate stock and they don't have a version that fits my 10FCP-SR with the factory bottom metal with detachable 10 round mag.

I have a Boyds thumbhole laminate and am very happy with it. Perfect fit no mods or bedding.
