As a rifle hunter, I prefer behind the shoulder. You might have to track a little ways, but if you put a bullet in there, the deer is done. I don't mind a little tracking anyways. The practice keeps my skills sharp. Also, I'm primarily a meat hunter. If you shoot up the shoulders and neck, your missing out on some good burger.

I've always shot just behind the shoulder. I've never lost a deer but I've not shot nearly as many deer as many on this forum.
Last buck I killed I hit in the neck. He was quartering pretty sharply to me at about 200 yards. I aimed for the point of the shoulder and pulled right just a bit. I probably got pretty lucky though. Bullet entered, took out the spine and exited through the left ribs. He never took a step. The doe that was with him had a very confused look as she tried to figure out what just happened.

90% of the time I am a behind the shoulder broadside shot kind of hunter when it comes to deer. 10% of the time I will shoot to break down both front shoulders. I only do this with a rifle and only when tracking the deer is something I want to avoid at all costs. Blowing out both shoulders usually results in a animal that drops in its tracks but also results in quite a bit of meat loss.
For pigs I will blow out both shoulders just about every time unless I plan to eat them. Every now and then I will take a head or neck shot on one but its usually a last resort.
Never cared for neck shots and in my opinion head shots are egotistical. II always shoot hogs with my 7mm loaded with a 150 gr corelokt ..double lung shot right behind shoulder..only once have I had to track one and that was my fault.. Overcompensated for windage...will defer to jcb on all shot placement..young whippersnapper!!..but learned something from everybody..thanks

I take the shot I'm given when rifle hunting. Broadside behind the shoulder, Quartering away aim for the front of the far shoulder, quartering to, aim for the back of the far shoulder, usually hitting the edge of the front shoulder, Straight on base of the neck, straight away no shot. I have not mustered up the courage for the Texas heart shot on a deer.

Pigs get shot in the ear hole. Whitetail get shot in the pump station. Axis get a mid shoulder shot. Elk get a high shoulder shot. Snakes, rabbits and squirrel get a head shot. Two legged vermin get a Mozambique drill.
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

Lot's of good info on this thread.
My follow up question is this- what's the best kill shot for potentially messing up the least amount of meat?
Adult late onset hunter. Why did I wait so long to get started?

Head, but potential for miss and/or poor shot placement. Just shoot behind the shoulder double lung, you'll be gtg.

Boiler room shot doesn't mess up anything but the ribs if done right.
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

I just turned 60 this year been hunting since I was 6 years old..In my experience I have always shot for the vitals..heart lung shot..preferably double lung shot..just talked with another " old timer" and he said he aims for the neck..said he has never seen a dying deer always kills them instantly..so my question is what is your default shot..mine has always been right behind front shoulder..lung heart shot..what say you?? the interested in what you say jcb My shot selection is based on other factors...like movement and distance. For example you rarely get a buck standing still in Miss. :-) Clavicle shot is the obvious choice at short distances (Texas box blinds) but only broadside or quartering to...beyond 150 yards I think the responsible shot is double lung.

My follow up question is this- what's the best kill shot for potentially messing up the least amount of meat? I still prefer the shoulder shoot if the buck is put on the ground. I have found very little wasted meat with a complete pass thru and the buck drops in his tracks IME. If the struggles or runs then you get the blood shot effect. I have shot a few deer behind the shoulders and had a bloody mess to clean up when I was cleaning the deer. Shot deer hi-shoulder or thru the shoulders and thrown away less than 1/2 lb of meat trimmed off around the entry and exit holes.
Are idiots multiplying faster than normal people?

If you miss forward, it is the base of the neck. If you miss back, it is in the vitals. If you miss low, it is breaks the shoulders or legs. If you miss high, you missed. My This. You hit them right... they will be within 20ft of where you shot them.

Hi-point of the shoulder is my shot on any deer. It anchors the deer in it tracks with zero tracking. It gets spine, neck, and/or shoulders on the deer. I have used this shot for 24 yrs now and will not change. My preferred shot is just slightly lower/farther back from STX's - straight up the front leg 1/2 half way up the depth of the body. If I miss 6" in any direction, the result is the same... dead deer. When I do my part, they go straight down. I also love the quartering-to, crease of the neck shot. Impressive results!

Good info and lots of opinions. I like the mid shoulder shot like straight up from the back of the front leg. Rarely do my deer drop and sometimes no blood trail as I hunt with my trusty ole 243 but tracking is not too far from where I laid it in there.

I was taught the behind the shoulder/vitals shot, and while there might be a little tracking if the shot wasn't perfect, it usually is not too far. That being said, I can see where the high point of the shoulder would be a good choice depending on conditions and terrain. If it was close to end of the day, I might try the high shoulder shot, I hope I get an opportunity to try this year!

I've always shot at the boiler room and have never had a buck go further than 15yds. The high shoulder looks like a good option as well

Most efficient is to the head, but messy. I've shot a ton of deer in the neck, just in front of the shoulder. Their butt hits the ground first and I've never had one get up, but I've had some take as long as 10 minutes to die from shock. Their neck is broken, but their vitals are not.
The high shoulder is a great shot, BUT, be very careful. There is an area above the vitals and beneath the spine that will cause you a lost deer if you are a bit high or back of your point of aim. I've personally seen three deer shot this way that went down, got up and took off never to be seen again. Well, two of them anyway. One showed back up at the same feeder three days later and was killed.
If I'm shooting a big, trophy deer, I shoot them square in the center of both shoulders. They may fall or they may run, but they won't go far.
Back to the high shoulder shot, many of you have heard of Roy Hindes III (Little Roy) and his famed blood trailing dogs. Roy told me he will not even come out to try and find a deer that was shot in the high shoulder and ran off, anymore. He showed me three sets of vertebrae he had wired together from a buck that got away after being shot in the high shoulder. All three vertebrae had damage to their bottom edges from a high shoulder shot. That deer was able to get up and haul azz. Roy found him dead a few days later.
One other thing, want to take a guess on what caliber accounts for the most lost trophy deer in Texas? 7mm mag is responsible for more than all other calibers combined, according to Little Roy. Have made more kill shots without tracking..pigs deer varmits..mule deer from a 7mm..besides a marlin lever action .30/.30..7mm has for me put more meat in the freezer and the grill than any other caliber..but that's just me
