I drew a December mule deer tag at Matador WMA. Im pretty sure the compartments are drawn or assigned but there are only 10 tags and its 28,000 acres. If anyone has any info or suggestions please let me know.....

Congrats on the draw. After orientation, they will allow you to pick your compartment in the order that you were drawn. The best compartments for mule deer when I hunted a few years ago were the middle and the western compartments. Each compartment is huge, most several thousand acres. In fact, most compartments are larger than most entire WMA's!
Good luck!

I'm headed up for the first whitetail hunt Nov 9. I'll try to post when I get back. PM me at that point and I'll let you know. I haven't heard much from the guys on here about it. Sounds like a bad-A place.

Pretty sure we had the "Ox" pasture. Wide river bottom with a high overlook at the north end. Neighbor had a green field and the deer would funnel in/out of the bottom to and from the green field. We killed a 138" 10pt WT and 153" 11pt WT from that spot. Had numerous monster muley Bucks feed by in route to the green field. It's an awesome draw hunt. Best of luck!

Are they still bow only or can you gun hunt? Spent a couple of fun weekends out there in the early 90's when I was at Tech.

Make sure you come with really good glass, range finder and shooting sticks. Practice taking 200-300 yard shots. Good luck.

Let me know where you see some does. I'm taking my boys who were drawn for the Antlerless hunt in Dec. Also would like to know if 4wd is absolutely necessary. I don't have a 4wd so was hoping the pastures closest to HQ may not need 4wd.

Good boots, good glass, and shooting sticks are a must. Be prepared to do quite a bit of walking over fairly rough terrain. There are some nice mulies out that way though. Chasing the elusive gray ghost is a lot of fun.
I'd stick to pastures and plains type terrain. They're tough to spot when in grass even with binos. Be looking for flickering ears and the "T" that the front of their face makes...and obviously antlers. If you can find a pod of does then there's a good chance that there will be a buck close by.
You should catch them right in the middle of the rut. But they don't function during the rut like whitetails do.
Cover ground and find good vantage points to glass from is the best advice that I can give.
Good luck!

My son was drawn for youth turkey this spring. He killed in the first hour of hunt and we were only ones there, so we explored the entire place. We saw a ton of deer. Most of the Muleys were on the west side like some already said. Jeh7remmag warned us about the loose sand, so I had an idea, but not enough sense to avoid it. We had hell getting through a few spots.
Congrats, that place is awesome.

We plan on hunting the middle of the place. Surely the rain they've gotten will pack the sand a little. I wish this was a buck hunt where you could get either a whitetail or Muley, but it's only whitetail. I am assuming they will be close to cover. With the rain they had this spring the antler quality should be very good! Needless to say.....I'm excited. I'm thinking that the rut should be kicking off. Moon times show the mid day to be good, we'll see.

That was a hard, amagazing hunt! I've never worked harder for a deer in Texas. Weather swings are crazy. If solitude is what you need then this hunt is what you need!

Yea, this ain't the type of hunt where you sit in a blind and stare at a corn feeder. You have to work for your deer. Sounds like you had a good time. How did you do? Any pics?
