This may or may not have already been discussed but in todays message I would like to begin by asking.....Who stays as perfectly scent free as possible? As for me, I squirt a splash of scent killer on and away I go. A good measure as follows Saturday I got down to the ranch for a quickie. I dressed out in camo's shot the bow a bit got a squirt and tried to find a fresh cow patty. I will step in the cow patties for my boots to help cover me up as good as possible. I forget about using deer attractant because maybe the bottle of urine is from an alcoholic deer and has too much other stuff in it. I will use whats available to me that the deer smell everyday. So fast forward I'm walking to my tree and check my feeder (I hunt the feeder from an acorn bearing tree ). Feeder is full with no corn on the spinner. I cant even get a stick in the hole ( thinking paper had gotten in the way) so I decide that a fresh chaw and cold beer will help ease me through the duress of surgery on my feeder for the afternoon hunt. I took the cage off, and feeder unit to reveal the funnel somehow shifted inside the barrel. A good pocket knife solved my problem by cutting out what part of the funnel that kept the corn from being dispensed. Through all of this after putting everything back, I managed to nearly cut my finger off with blood running down 3 fingers covered the ground and beer can that knocked over. my fresh chew was spit all over the ground and still had no fear of what I was doing. Ended up having 9 deer on my adventure and every one of them went and stayed under my tree munching on fallen acorns and buck corn. What is yalls take? For the record, if another hunter harvests a buck, I am usually first to get dibs on the tarsal glands. I will let them marinate in a plastic bag for a day or so then throw them in my hunting area. Works every time for the good bucks!

You spilled your beer, cut your finger, and you didn't harvest a deer? Sounds like a rough outing sir

On a serious note I don't go too extreme with scent control. I keep all my gear in a cedar chest and hunt the wind as much as possible. My Red Seal Wintergreen doesn't seem to bother the deer

I was more or less window shopping this weekend. Woould have shot given the fact that a big buck would have stepped out. Last year I harvested a nice 11 point typical on opening weekend. It has to be a wall hanger for me to flip the safety or come full draw

I have come to the conclusion that all our rituals are based on what has worked for us. I dont think something that works for me will necessarily work for you. I listen a lot and hear all kinds of crazy stuff, and I think at the end of the day the deer are going to be there or not, smell you or not, see you or not and get shot or not, and it all seems more like chance than anything else.

If I send my neighbors a text and ask them to give me feedback on my lawn and plant rye into a giant dong pattern, I'm probably going to get some less than positive feedback. Same goes here.

I think we give deer a little bit too much credit some times. Yes they see well, yes they smell well, but we sometimes act like they are super heroes, with super abilities. Are older deer smarter than younger deer? Probably. But they aren't the greatest, most powerful creatures on the planet.
I've heard people say a deer can detect up to 9 smells at one time. Says who? I don't know any scientist or otherwise who has had an in depth conversation with a deer about how many items they can smell at once.
Like I said at the start. Yes they have a good sense of smell, and yea, its much better than ours is. But there are just as many stories just like this as there are of guys getting "winded" and deer running off. It's a crap shoot as far as I'm concerned.

taking the tarsal glands from a dominate buck into a different area or property tends to draw out the dominate (or want to be) buck to see who's invading his territory. I have had good to mixed results with this.

They are not jedi masters, but their noses work better than ours. I have walked to the blind walked around the feeder with a bucket of corn and scattered some then wakled to the stand and waited for the sun to come up. Shortly aft light have a deer come in walk out and get to the path I walked stop smell look around smell the ground and follow my path all the way around the feeder exactly where I walked stopping every once in a while to look around then about 30-40 yards infront of the blind stopping looking up at the blind and then walk off. Had it happen more than once. Been winded at over 100 yards just from wind carrying scent. They aren't the biggest and badest critter in the brush that's why they have good noses, it helps them live.

I agree that deer are wild animals and as such have above average senses compared to humans. However, as some hunters will attest, there appear to be ninjas out there that for whatever reason just know not to go around certain places during the right times and will never get shot...is it their senses or their smarts or just dumb luck that creates the effect? We will never know, and might be a combination of the above. For what its worth, I am a relatively new hunter (about 7 years) and have witnessed some pretty amazing things while in the woods in my meager 40 year existence of playing boy scout. But one thing I have learned (no, not from pappy ) is to always use the wind to your advantage. A deer can't smell what isn't going to his nose.
