Long story short....I have to get a feeder set up and going on a property in Oklahoma this weekend.

Not looking to spend a bunch of money now; I'm simply going to upgrade next year and have this as a secondary.

Requirements.....

1. Minimum 55gal(or equivalent)
2. Easy/reliable digital timer
3. Solar panel capable(either comes with or can be attached)
4. Be able to purchase it off the shelf...(Prefer academy)

Your thoughts?

Check the feeders at HEB. $100 bucks. Got one the first year on the lease thinking the same thing, I'd upgrade the next year. 3 years now, only thing I've bought was battery and solar charger. Bought a second one this year for a new area...

Whatever you do, do NOT buy the American hunter 225 lb. feeder from Academy. It's pictured below. My BIL picked one up last year due to it being cheap, and its just that...cheap. Pain in the arse to program, the legs are paper thin flimsy tubing, and seems very small to me, but its also not a 55 gallon like I'm used to.

I picked up two 55 gallon feeders off craigslist last year for $75. All they needed were batteries and a timer. My dad gave me a The Timer, I picked up a 12v battery and a solar panel and away I went. I know it may not help, but you might check craigslist.

There's some decent ones on Craig's list in Austin and Dallas (i imagine you drive through or near Dallas) for around or under 200

Like said above don't get American hunter, I will add wildgame innovations and anything that has a plastic barrel to that list.

I've heard lots of horror stories of people having their property stolen by tweakers in Oklahoma. Might just use 4" PVC pipe homemade feeders.

You should have listed a specific price range.
Most all of the 55 gal feeders will work. The problem I have always had with them is the (motor/timers)
If you want a great off the shelf feeder then "All Seasons" would be a great one because they have a great Timer/motor. Some Buccees have them in stock.
I now only use 12 volt motors. Nothing worse than going out to hunt and have your feeder not working for the last couple of weeks.
I also like Metal construction of the feeder (I had a plastic one break out the bottom years ago after adding 300lb of corn to it)

So if buying from Academy: (I would plan to replace the timer/motor before the next season or two so you are only really buying the container to put the corn in, the Moultrie and wildGame Inovations timers are junk most of the time)
1. $199.99 Moultrie Pro Hunter 55-Gallon Tripod Feeder
2. $319.99 Game WinnerŪ 600-lb Big "A" Feeder (I hate Game Winner but this feeder is nice)
3. all of the under $99 ones from academy are about the same , plastic barrels, similar timers as the above.

If you don't mind having some assembly I really like the Big A with the below control box (if you get this assemble it in your garage at home, it will transport nicely upside down in the back of your truck.
The size is nice especially if you don't make it out very often and it has a platform to stand on when filling it)

If you want something quick to throw up then the Moultrie.

I would make plans to replace the control box (timer/motor) with the following All Seasons.
12 VOLT EVOLUTION CONTROL UNIT ($ 149.00_)
http://www.allseasonsfeeders.com/collect...on-control-unit

I now its hard to spend this much on a control box when many feeders don't cost this much, but I've has too many bad experience with the cheapo timers/motors over the years
I've also had the stock motors/timers work fine for a few years, Its just a gamble if its going to freeze up on you.

If your just needing a cheap feeder most of the $99 feeders are about the same. They can work but longevity will be in question.

When I needed a budget one, I have had good luck with the 55 gallon (green) sun slingers - they have solar, everything is easy to assemble and I've bought them for $125-135 at Buccees before.

Same here, got mine at Cabelas. Once a year I change the 6 volt and AA battery, and generally don't have to mess with them any more. Of I do, it's because of coons.

You couldn't give me a Moultrie feeder. I'm done messing with their junk.

Pretty sure if you go to any HEB they can get one shipped to your store quick, like next day. I ordered things from one in south Tx and received them next day
