I've been wanting to raise sheep for a LONG time. We have some family land but it doesn't have the net wire and while my father is still running it, no sheep are allowed smile But a friend of mine has two, 20 acre tracts with net wire and agreed to by my "partner". So I bought 2 bred ewes and 1 ram. The ewes should drop lambs in next 2 months. From being on here I know lamb survival is iffie. But what else do I need to know in general?

Keep the coyotes out and worm them especially if you have green grass.

To determine if fence will hold them, get a bucket of water and throw the water at the fence wire. If the water goes through it, the fence is not sheep/goat proof.

Worm them often. Check their hooves in case you need to trim them.

Sheep just die, that's pretty much what to expect.

Like Curtis Said worm them often! Safe guard blocks don't work! They help but they don't cure worms 100% Get a jack [censored] if you want them to live and reproduce...

Also have a safe place for them to go at night. If you have a jack As$ or a great pyrenese dog they will learn will to go. Sheep are feeble animals but can do well with protection. Feed them in a safe place for a few days

Feed them often even if they have lots to eat on the acreage. Get them as gentle as possible and when/if they get out, it will be a lot easier to get them to come back in.

we have them in a holding pen right now and all going well so far. No donkey but there is a minture horse in the pasture with them. They are relatively tame right now and feeding them each evening for now. We might keep them in the holding pen until the ewes lamb to try and give them a better chance of making it. We will worm them 2-3 x per year. If they make it, I'll continue to grow the herd.
Thanks for the advice.

If You don't have the best of Luck with them and still want to own Sheep, buy some Pure Mouflon, they are twice as Hardy, twice as Predator Proof, and bring more than twice the Money! Someone commented about the Fence required to keep them in, not true with Sheep as it is with Goats, You are trying to fence Predators out more than the Sheep in.

Thanks for the advice- yeah we considered mouflon but didn't want to invest more $$ not knowing if we could actually do it. I have another 10 acre pen that adjoins the one where these are where we could keep another type sheep. Also we weren't sure how wild the mouflon would get and wanted to have sheep we could work easily if needed.

Hilonesome- those are some great looking mouflons you have !!!
