Thinking about buying a 6.5 creed or 7mm-08 primarily as a baby sister to my 300. I want to be able to run more rounds in a day through as well as be a back up for hunting. The biggest game would be elk. Thinking something around a 18-20 in barrel

What bullet would you go with?

6.5 Creed = 140 gr VLD Hunting
7mm-08 = 168 VLD Hunting

Had you not said elk I would have said 140 gr A-max in the 6.5mm and 162 gr A-max in the 7mm. They are a dime bullet cheaper and have killed everything I have asked them to. But I have not asked them to kill an elk.

Also look at the Hornady SST line. They aren't high dollar, have a decent BC, and many here have reported good results on game.

I'll have more on game testing with th 129 ABLR I hope here shortly.
The 130 and 140 vld work as does the 139 Lupa, but haven't blown me away per say.

Oh and this is in the creedmoor. Not a fan of the amax, it works but I think the vld just works better IMO

I like the Amax price point. I even debated putting two scopes or re zero during hunting season

I am a bit surprised y'all were saying 140 for 6:5 creed out of a 18-20
Inch barrel. I wish there new 130 was good for hunting frown

A buddy of mine runs the 129 SST in his 24" barrel, very deadly and penetrates like crazy. He pokes a deer in the ham 2 years ago by accident and found the bullet in the opposite side at the junction of the shoulder/neck.

Put a 130 gr. in the 6.5 Creed. It should leave around 2820 fps out of a 20" barrel. Just know your barrel will be eroded pretty badly around 1500 rounds, if that even matters to you. I ran a 130 gr in my 260 Rem for the first 500 rounds. They ended up well north of 2900 fps with a 24" barrel and were extremely fun to shoot. I got away from them for the throat erosion reason.

That's one of the reason I am leaning towards 7mm-08. As I understand barrel life is higher

I use a 130 vld in a 6.5 and it works pretty good. I like what it does to the animals

708 is a great hunting round. A 162 A-max is hard to beat, for the price, and makes a great hunting bullet. The VLD's are really good also, just a little more in price. Any of the 6.5mm rounds I like a 140 grain. If you wanted it a little faster, than a 129/130 is good. Barrel life will be reduced from a 140, but I say get what you want and shoot the heck out of it. I can buy barrels easily.

Yessir. Sits between a 6.5 Creedmoor and a .308. I built a 20" 7mm-08 with a 1:9" twist. 40.0 gr H-Varget, suppressor, 162 gr. A-max, and it makes 2635 fps MV.

Sure hope I see a coyote this morning since the 7mm-08 is what I am taking with me...

Yeah I am going to start watching to see if a semi custom goes on sale...if not may start one next year

I think 7mm-08 is right for me. I don't the absolute best ballistics.

Once I get there I will play around with the amax and Berger

The 162gr Amax is awesome on game. I never had a issue with it from deer to 250lbs pigs from 100 to 450yrs.

If you build one (and I hope you do) have the gunsmith ream it for 7mm-08 A.I. Once my barrel finally goes south that is what the next one will be chambered in.
