Where did my deer go and why aren't they back? #5972501 10/12/15 01:23 AM

I lease about 300 acres in East Texas in Marion County. Been feeding year round, the hogs found the corn about June and have stayed put. Upon research on the THF, I built a pen around my feeder. Its been 2 weeks since the build and only one shot from my trail cam of 3 juvenile hogs at night. I had deer coming to eat daily until the hog invasion. I'm the only hunter on the land. Where did the deer go and will they come back? I put out some Big&J attractant hoping this will help. Any thoughts?

Is the corn piling up under the feeder?

Sounds like 'your' deer were going a bit out of there way, from a good bit away, and found the journey no longer worth it to find the only corn left for them had already made it's way through a hog!
Keep the hogs out, and eventually they may come around once they get bored with wherever they are currently getting their grub, and check your place again.

They will be back. I feed year round as well and when it was so green this spring I actually had corn growing in the feed pen. Getting lots of activity right now but expect it to slow down when acorns start to fall. We have lots of persimmons and the ground is torn up under every tree. It's all about their preferred foods. Hogs will run them off feeders that aren't enclosed. Our place is infested with pigs but they don't hang around the feeder much since I fenced it in.

Welcome to acorns on the ground. Have seen corn get 2 inches deep under a feeder on a real good acorn year.

Hunt the acorns.

Fertilize the oaks where you want the deer to feed on years like this where acorns are likely to be plentiful, helps in years when the acorn crop is not as good also.

Of course that takes planning from late last Winrer when you will want to put the fertilizer out. 13-13-13 works well for oaks

This is your problem. They have started falling and all our deer have really laid off the feeders.
