I find that when I put the deer blocks out, the various critters can work them over and devour them in just a couple of days. Also, they'll push the blocks all around the area, sometimes to the point that I can't find them! To slow them down a bit, I built some "deer block cages" using cow panel and gear screws, or hose clamps. I cut the panel to size, clamp the pieces together, hinging one panel to allow access. I place the blocks in the cages, use a snap swivel to hold the cage door closed, and then attach a length of chain to the snap swivel to keep the cage from being pushed off into the brush as the animals go after the block. Here's a picture of a doe who got down on her knees to get to the block; I'd never seen that before!

Great idea, though I would have left the top open and staked it into the ground with a 12" spikes
Or run a t post through it

That would sure work rickym, but around here, these days, I'd need a pile drive to get spikes or t-posts in the ground! I have 2 inches of loose dust and then a couple of feet of granite gravel, followed by solid granite! Not a nice place to drive anything but my truck. smirk

Interesting idea. Hogs will finish a block in about two hours around our place.
I have to ask, what are the small pieces of hog panel strapped to the feeder legs for?

Simple Searcher, the small pieces of panel are used to mount solar landscape lights. I use 3 of them and train them into the center of the feeder drop zone. They provide enough light for me to shoot varmints/hogs without having to break out my night gear, and they last about 3-4 years before I have to replace them.

EddieWalker, I use whatever happens to be on sale at the feed store. My favorite are blocks made by Nutrena.

BTW, SimpleSearcher, the deer block cage will REALLY slow the consumption rate of the feral hogs! And, while they're worrying about trying to get to the block in the cage, they become excellent targets that don't move as much as they do when they're rooting around a loose block or are vacuuming up corn kernels.

I'd just drill a hole the thru the middle of the block and hang about 3' off the ground. Deer can still get it but hogs not so much.

Eddie, if the deer around my property had their choice, they would pick the HiPro Feeds #105815; the GX 30-30 Deer Block. I've sat several blocks of different manufacture side-by-side and watched the consumption rate. The HiPro wins every time. And that happens to be the block that the doe in the picture was down on her knees to get after!

(the solar powered landscape lights on the feeder legs is brilliant!!!) ... I merely use the sulfur salt blocks away from my feeders to try to draw the hogs & livestock away. They last about 3-4 months even with the heavy number of cattle we have on our place, longer at other locations without livestock.

They are higher in consumption because they are softer. Being softer they are easier for a deer to eat since deer do not have top front teeth. It is a good marketing ploy to sell more blocks.

All I know is that they sure do make the deer happier than any of the other brands I've put out for them!
