Currently in montana running my new pup with my older dogs. Complete bust. Just like all my other dogs when they were pups. The idea of the old dog showing the new dog never helps me. Pup is just running around looking for the old dog and busting his points time and time again. This morning going back to my tried and true method and hunt pup alone

It's not good for the pup or the older dog.

Hunting report? How's the hunting?

They need both. To get to run some with the big dogs and get to hunt on their own. But a pup needs to be collar conditioned and have good recall before I turn them loose with an older dog. And I always work pups on pen raised quail or pigeons (will be pigeons from now on) before they are turned loose on wild birds anyway, so I have never had one that has messed up much from day one in a wild bird field.

8 months old. I got her nose working on pigeons and pointing, used to the gun shot, comes when called before we left. Its a whole different ballgame with hunting wild birds.
On a good day in 4 hours were finding 3 coveys of huns and 10 to 20 sharptails. With my older dogs

On my trips to Montana, there were a lot of hedgerows through out that country. Hedgerows hold birds. Take the time to go walk one of these rows with your pup, just the two of you. Let the pup point, chase, act like a puppy. No shooting just yet. Usually, a light will go off in the pup's mind and it will try to point and hold. If this is done somewhat acceptable, you may want to harvest the bird or two. Be patient! This is a long process. Just talk to the pup and encourage it. If it points, do not say a word. Let it hold as long as it will. Try not to walk in from behind to flush because the pup might think you are inviting it to help you flush. Swing a little wide of the pup and try to flush back at the pup from the front. The pup needs to see you, not hear you, in the same panoramic as it is focusing on the bird. But the most important thing is to find some birds. The pup will not make a dog in the dog box and without birds.

Interesting. I have always run pups with older dogs and had great success.

Pointing is inherent patience is not. The pup thinks she's winning first to bird giver time shell hunt.

I've had some that trailed and some that never did from the start, but never one that I would allow to but pointed birds. Imagine the embarrassment if you were hunting with others who had dogs.

I wouldn't be embarrassed. I would just put the pup on a check cord to keep it from being a pain, or put it up. Then work it later, after the big dogs have finished.

I always focus on yard work with a pup. Once those basics are locked in the time in the field seems to go much better.

+1, I have had pups that could do it early, others took longer

I saved myself the aggravation and had mine professionally trained. They did an awesome job.

By far one of the best trainers nationally IMO. I plan on taking their seminars soon as well, that way I can take what they teach home with me and train the pup myself.
