I'm sending a deposit today to Black Water Creek Retrievers for a Chocolate female. I spoke in Mike Hudman this morning and he was very informative and helpful. I'm very excited to be getting our new pup in December. I've been thinking about this for a long time but just never pulled the trigger. Can't wait to get started! Might not be the most impressive pedigree but after talking to mike about these dogs I think she will be perfect for me and my family http://huntinglabpedigree.com/testbreedpedigree.asp?id=8495

Don't let your little girl play with it. It's a hunting machine.

Now that I've put down the deposit what should I look for when I go to pick her up. Tips on picking a pup out of a litter?

let the pups pick you, then go from there. When I have picked from a litter I like the pups to come to me 1st, then look at retrieving drive, then looks...That is just me though
Good looking pedigree, all should do the work.

The breeder should know the pups and should be able to best match you.
I'll take a Black Female every time.

Take a look at my post titled "Moose" he's sired from one of Mikes pups two years ago. I think. I'd have to check his paperwork, I'm always getting confused. Nearly sent him back to Mike for training but cash flow didn't allow in the end. Fantastic dogs. Good, solid, loyal family dogs and mine was retrieving sticks from the red river in June when it was flowing hard as a young pup. The retrieve instinct in these dogs can't be stopped. The softest mouthed dog I have ever worked. He will retrieve balloons without popping them. Congrats on the purchase and good luck with them.

You'll love the breed...they are somewhat high strung at first then settle down. I took the first one that came to me and she had huge feet. She's now 9 months, 74 lbs and 24" high. Leave her with the litter as long as possible so she knows the reaction to biting and getting bit. Had a bit of a problem with that. I am old school in terms of training...no shock and no treats for being a bad pup. A swift smack with a plastic flyswatter or a few pages of rolled newspaper works. That was after spending $200 with a dog whisperer that didn't work. She is fine with the grandkids. Don't force her into doing anything like going into water, retrieving and listening to gun noise. The water and reteiving will come naturally. Gun noise...I started by lighting firecrackers while she was a little ways away..she came running back to me. Since then... I shoot skeet on my ranch and she'll run after the ones I miss and bring them back.

Just reading through the forum today and had a small heart attack. While some dogs probably don't care about fireworks and it clearly worked for Billybob, I would say he was lucky. Please for the love of God don't shoot firecrackers to get your dog used to gun noise. Maybe Angie or Kevin or other pros can chime in here but please don't go that route. Just look at this recent thread on RTF... http://www.retrievertraining.net/forums/showthread.php?118218-Can-fireworks-cause-gun-shyness As far as picking out a pup...most experienced people I know say it's mostly a crap shoot. They just find a good litter, close their eyes and pick a pup. With that said, it's nice to have one that makes natural eye contact at such a young age as well.

I like to tell the breeder what I am looking for in a dog. Most of the time the pup I have received ended up being a good fit. However I have picked my fair share of pups and it truly depends on what you are looking for in a dog. Calm laid back pups typically turn into calm laid back older dogs. Most of them can still do the work but just depends on what you are looking for regarding style. I personally prefer the hard charging high energy dogs.
I also believe size ends up having a lot to do with drive and personality. Obviously not an exact science but I correlate it to people. Most huge people don't have huge amounts of energy but it doesn't mean they can't work hard. There are also small lazy people and high energy big people but it can be a trend if you ask me.
I like watching the litter play for a bit, then take the dogs aside and see if they will chase a dead duck around or a sock or anything. I think chase is a huge part. Most of the rest can be taught.

The breeder should know the pups and should be able to best match you. I agree w/this 100%. Congrats, enjoy the ride and post plenty of pics please.

Mine came over, laid down between my feet and fell asleep. She knew who would eventually take her home.

Well guys I didn't end up getting that pup. As far as I know they haven't been born yet.
I joined an area HRC and met some awesome people. One of which has a good chocolate litter coming up. Although I have nothing but good things to say about Black Water Creek I felt like buying this puppy from the people I'll be training with on a regular basis was a good idea.
Even more excited about this new puppy and can't wait to get started.
