Bear makes some good bows near that price range, but you are going to get a dozen answers of "go buy a used (brand x)."
I say go shoot a few in that price range and buy new.

Agreed. Don't go off what other "pro" archery guys say! Shot everything that you can afford and buy the one that just felt right to you.

When I started out I was shooting a Martin from academy. Threw a lot of arrows and killed many of pigs. They didn't know I wasn't shooting a mathews....
Diamond makes some good bows that are lower price point.

Diamond which is made by bowtech and also makes all the redhead bows at bp are priced around that range ready to go. I shoot a diamond the rock 2010 model and it has killed deer and pigs for me. I bought it new completely setup for $300. I have changed out the rest and sights for something a little nicer than what came with it. It has more to do with how comfortable you are with you're equipment and how often you shoot it than how much it cost.

Find someone needing the cash and buy a used MATHEWS ,Bowtech, or Hoyt rigged out...look around and you will find a great deal! I wouldn't go buy a new bow for $300 ....they are cheap for a reason. Get a top of line used bow and it will last many years.

This is my advice too Diamond is bowtechs single cam line and are good bows (I shoot a diamond iceman ) but some of there lower end bows are cheap feeling. If I were to buy new right this second I would buy Mathews Shoot a bunch, buy what you like and spend your money on rest and sights
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I find its more about what you put into it practice wise. A Mathews, bowtech, hoyt etc. isn't going to make a poor bow hunter a good bowhunter and a good bowhunter will be fine with whatever he rigs correctly and practices with.
I shoot a 10 year old parker buckhunter and it does the job just fine. Dad bought a Diamond from cabelas for a hair under 300 this year and its been great so far.

I disagree ...I bought my wife a cheap Browning Adrenaline rigged out new for $299 and she shot decent with it. After one year of making sure she was going to enjoy it , I bought her a Mathews z7 rigged out . What a differance ! She did go from a decent shot to a great shot all because of equipment .... It's like comparing a Honda 4 wheeler to one of those cheap made in China 300$ 4 wheeler. Sure both will work but there's a huge differance in quality, durability , etc. ....You never see a serious competition shooter going to compete with a new $300 bow for a reason..You can however buy a $1000-$1500 setup for a 1/3 of that when someone needs the cash or wants to upgrade ...

I bet the year of practice didn't hurt the Matthews. Any chance it was set up better than the Browning? Had to get my cheap arse bow tuned from new, it made a huge difference.

The best bow, is the bow that feels the best in your hands. Best bet is to go to several shops (not big box stores preferably) and shoot a bunch of them.

Yes Sir it was setup better. Qad drop rest and really good trophy ridge sights. The browning had a tm Hunter 2 prong type rest and decent tru glo sights. But that was my point. A man can look around a find a nice used setup for cheap that's rigged with top of line stuff already. The main thing is just to get a bow and practice often. Bowhunting is awesome! God Bless!
