Update... the flooding in May knocked out a section of our high fence...Funny thing is he seems to have a little of the "stockholm syndrome"... That should get the ever popular gentlemen's discussion going again. I inherited the high fence, and all the exotics in it. We have approx 25 red deer, and onsies and twosies of other stuff like Auodad, Corsicans, Sika, Mouflan and the red deer are humping like mad. I supplement their feed and we dont hunt them, only on the low side, which is half the ranch. I wish it had never been put up, but they didnt ask me...

The only place that I have seen them is hanging out in trees other than when I run across one on the ground foraging for food. I don't usually kill for the sake of getting rid of something with the exception of coons on the feeders, but porucupines also kill trees and are a nuisance in my book. I would take them out if they are causing you grief, especially if my dog was injured.

I have trouble with these critters. They get my dogs and worse yet my cattle. We have way too many in Edwards County. I've seen them strip 2 square feet of bark off a large live oak overnight. We usually catch them up in oaks but occasionally in a trap too. Way to often we find them in the yard. They have always been around here but seem to be getting more plentiful. The highway is covered with them in this area, skunks are bad this year too. Don't need either.

This might work if you have an issue with them near a feeder.
Knew an old timer that had em getting into bags of feed he had stored. He stood an old open ended 55 gallon barrel next to the feed. Dumped a few pounds of feed in the bottom. Within 2 days had caught 3. They could climb the bags and then into the barrel but couldn't climb out. Works for mice/rats too.

I only saw them in far`west Tx prior to about 1990... never in hill country... after a trip to the vet, you'll learn to hate them... and some dogs seem to have a steep learning curve...

We are covered up with them on the river. They have gotten my dogs numerous times so I declared war. I see them in the mesquite trees early in the morning. Very easy to pick out when the leaves have dropped. I am not able to add the pic to show what I mean. I will add later if I can

I have yet to see one, but don't know how I would feel if one of my pups took a hit. The pic of the dog was especially troubling. Do these just get pulled like a thorn or is it a trip to the vet?

Trip to vet. Don't try this yourself.

I hate porcupines. Our dogs got a hold of one a couple of years ago resulting in an emergency trip to the vet since the quills were literally in their tongues. They both got tangled up with a skunk last year, and one of them decided to corner one a few weeks ago...right before we were about to leave the ranch and spend 5.5 hours in the truck. We also have a big, black porcupine that's suddenly started coming up to one of our feeders at night. Freaking nuisances.

They will come to water at dusk. That's when we shoot most of them. Only good for killing trees, harming livestock and hurting pets.

To be determined
