are after market chokes (briley, carlson, trulock...) really any different from factory chokes

It's one of those things you don't know until you compare. In most cases patterns are improved but homework is needed.

All factory chokes are not created equal. Even though I like Winchester and Browning shotguns I feel their factory chokes are sub-par. Benelli/Beretta factory chokes are better. I prefer extended chokes because I can tell at a glance which choke I'm using and they protect the crown of the barrel. Many people think extended chokes pattern better than flush. From what I have read and backed up by the patterning I've done, that is not the case. The exception is sometimes extended chokes pattern better when shooting heavy loads of steel shot.
