Hey guys this is my first year in the drawn hunts. I only signed up for 2

Just trying to understand what the 2nd draw is exactly.

Is it a second shot in case someone doesnt pay for their spot on time?

Then they redraw against the whole field of applicants again. Or do they pick based on loyalty points which I have none. LOL

Yes if it said 2nd draw you have an chance to win again. Loyalty points just tell you how many times you were not drawn.

It means you did not get picked and probably won't ever get picked. At least that is only based on my observations.

Isn't it more like you have another chance to loose again.

I really don't like the new computer system. Makes it way to easy for guys to apply for hunts.

Struck out again this year. I'm curious to hear from anyone who got drawn on a gun deer hunt, how many points did it take?

I got drawn for a GDA this year with 8 or more LP's I think it was...on a 2nd Drawing status, and struck out on 5 other Hunts with up to 15 LP's in a Category.

Them points don't make any difference of being drawn. Someone with 20 points has the same odds of winning as me with zero.

Yep!!!
I've been drawn 2 years in a row for a archery deer hunt, drawn for a exotic archery hunt with only 1 point, and drawn for some gun hunts with 5 or less.

It's crazy because I've never been picked for a gun hunt, period. Now archery i've been drawn 5 times over the years.

Out of 26 hunts that I have applied for so far 14 have been "Not selected" and those were the ones with the best odds.

I will probably go 0-26 this year, just like I did last year.

Just some thoughts about the differences in the new Loyalty Point Ssytem from the old Preference Point System that are becoming more visbale with usage, with a 20 year history of Participation.

Couple things about the changes from the old PP system to the LP system we have now ... is it's not just the more accurate name change, nor is it the continuing lack of a Rockies States style of awarding Lottery Hunt Tags according to the number of Points accrued in a tiered or weighted system, that rewards the "banking" of PP's that allows a Hunter to know WHEN he will most likely get drawn for a tough to get Hunt, with the accumlation at a certain # of PP's accrued, that encourages long term participation in the Lottery. No, the LP sytem is a wholesale change from the old PP system, and to be sucessful in the LP /system requires a totally different understanding of the nuances in the new system, and reduction in expectations of what the LP system provides vs what the PP system provided in the number App's required to Draw a Permit.

IMO ...it is the advent of allowing unlimited numbers of entries in a given Hunt Category that has resulted in folks loosing faith that they'll EVER get drawn and that will result in them dropping out of the Particpation Pool since they are not getting drawn regularly on ANY Category...and this loss of Participation Pool in Texas Resident Hunters will only get worse as more and more Non Resident Hunters discover the new LP system's ease of entry, and at the same Texas Resident Fee price @ $3 bux a pop per App yadda yadda that is only designed for an enhanced revenue stream for TPW...and not any increase in Participation Pool Permit Awards. Prime location Hunts were always already sold out...and the increase in Non Rez App's will accelerate the loss of Resident Hunters...and the subsequent loss of interest levels at all aspects of TPW Funding by the Texas Resident Taxpayers.

I used to keep records over a 7-8-10 year period of given Hunt Category x Location Hunts, and track success %'s vs #'s of Permits allocated each year, to either apply for the single entry then allowed in a Hunt Category I only wanted to build Points in (aka buying a Point in other states programs) - knowing & accepting that my App entry was a very long shot on getting drawn ....or chase a given Category's Hunt location I really wanted to win a Permit on. I was usually winning a Hunt of some kind every year or so and kept me interested in Applying every year... and one year won 3 Hunts, including 2 at places I'd never been before or would have considered otherwise....a win/win for everybody despite my not harvesting anything on the new to me locations...but extending my learning curve on How to be successful at that Best location if I were to ever return. One place was a washout & has not been Listed for a Hunt program in recent years, but I'd apply for the same Hunt, plus other Categories in the 2nd location with out hesitation if it ever became more conventient time & distance wise than it given where I live now.

So ...IMO the LP system is not conducive to & nor will it actually award multiple Permits for say a single Category despite multiple applications for a GDA Hunt - IMO you are apparently disquslified for other Location App's if you've been drawn within Category in a given year even though TPW is actually charging multiple App fees for that same Category...AND the more importantly the LOSS of the PREVIOUSLY ACCRUED LP'S WITHIN CATEGORY IF YOU ARE DRAWN, DESPITE PAYING MULITPLE APP FEE'S ON HUNTS NOT DRAWN.

The "bonus" for TPW is that while I will only spend the same $$'s overall as in previous years, and only to apply for fewer Categories, since TPW does not have to reward me with multiple Permits in the same Category...ie an increase in net profit received & reduced services provided per Permit Awarded....and my chances of being drawn are reduced if I only enter multiple Category's for a single location with the increase's in Non Resident App's, just like it was in the old PP sytem. Kinda like the old "16 oz Pound of Coffee is now actually only 10-12oz's" marketing scam.
JMHO & YMMV

I think the draw hunts are now ran by a third party company. So the state is actually getting less for the these hunts.

TH ...I think TPW outsourced all their Lottery/Permit/License activities when they began the series of computerized upgrades Department wide...umm way more than a couple years ago. TPW does not run it's own in house IT group and never has that I know of after they got off a duplicate hand write system at the HQ Smith School Rd, Austin location....and is why they can't take checks or MO's for payment anymore....unless they have a cashier at the Ausitn HQ. Dunno never been there.

20+ years ago I used to send in MO's for Lottery Entry Fees, kept the Receipts 'cause the internal mail would get lost sometimes when they had just one very nice to talk to lady doing all of the Lottery Hunt App's by herself by hand...and nowdays you can get a License or Permit from your I Phone out in the field or on the water if need be.
