Sorry to be a party pooper, but if you send enough "lead" down range, you are bound to get a hit eventually.

For me, I prefer to spend my time, effort, and money training on making shots that I have a high percentage of first or second round hits... Shooting at something until I eventually connect seems like a waste of resources to me, but that is just me.

Long range shooting isnt for everyone. To hit a 36 in plate at 3800 yards requires a lot of things to line up correctly. Most people cant shoot sub moa at 100 yards....he did it at 38x that distance. Pretty big accomplishment imo

They researched what grain bullet and therefore what BC would give them the best down range results. Then they had to figure out what twist, what powder, and how fast they could push it in their environmental conditions. The bullet had to have enough weight and BC to fly predictably trans sonic (below the speed of sound). Which I would assume they were doing in central Texas. Had they gone to Utah or Nevada this project would have been easier because the DA would be so high and they would have gained hundreds of yards of supersonic flight. They needed to know how long the barrel needed to be to get complete burn of the powder.

Notice the scope base. That was custom made so that the shooter had enough travel left in the scope to dial that far. That is why they mentioned 13' high at 100 yards. That is with the erector bottomed out the POI is 13' above POA. Which translated to 43.3 Mils of travel available.

The scope. They picked a good one, there are others that would have done the job of course. 25X is awesome even to a mile, I've done it. You have a fairly small target but it is more than do-able. Twice that distance and that plate probably looked tiny in the scope.

The driving of the rifle is the easy part. There are plenty of people that could have made perfect shots.

I never heard them adjust elevation, so their predicted trajectory was very good. Their misses were wind, which is the vast majority of the time, the reason anyone misses at long range. That bullet may have flown through more than four different wind speeds and directions in its' way to the target, that is very tough to correct for for anyone!

They didn't edit the video to make everyone think they jumped out there and connected cold bore because 99% of the long range shooting community would have pulled the flag out.

There is a lot of math involved. Steady you can deal with. Variable is a total different story. Plus the higher the bullet travels the higher the wind speed. Spherical trig is involved to make that shot. I would challenge an adverage shooter to hit it with a 100 shots.

Forget math, calculating that dope took a physicist.

That built a ballistic program that runs on an algorythm and provides excellent predicted trajectory. There really is very little math involved (for the shooter) shooting long range.

doh! Forgot modern calculators, don't use them much if ever. But trajectory's always the easy part. The corialis alone is daunting on that shot.

They've already got a 375 or 408 Chey Tac to over 4K yards now. I've talked about doing a custom .458" caliber based on a hefty round. When you play out that long, you need bullet mass. The .458" custom bullets we were going to make were about 550-600 grains, and a G1 BC of over 1.300. Est velocity was 3100 fps. 3500-3800 yards is doable with a lot of different rounds, .338", 375, 408, etc. But the last bit of yardage is the hard part. You have to launch a bullet fast, with high BC and lots of weight. And a custom rail and rings to get the elevation you need.

Hey, it only took 3 barrels to get the hit......sorry, couldn't resist. Did you see the scope rail??? Damn, its shooting straight up in the air. Pretty cool. The Hill Country Rifle guys really are a nice bunch and build a great rifle

Rifle built in TX, shot taken in TX, shooter from NJ. Matt and the rest of the HCR team do outstanding work no matter what the project is. I have always been impressed with the results they have given me. As has been mentioned the wind calls were something.

I think it was a cool shot, but I personally wouldn't be calling it a record, more luck, as if you through enough lead down range you will eventually hit the target.

Elevation is easy. Judging wind is the hard part. And as I said before, there is no telling how many wind directions and velocities that bullet passed through on the way there.

Heck I've had a right to left cross at me, shot across a canyon 600 yards and it was left to right at the target. That's the moment I learned to check mirage between, and at the target. 600 yards is tiny compared to the distance these guys shot.
