This is what a 7mm08 case looks like after it's shot through a 270. Be sure you double check your ammo.

Rifle shot the next three rounds in a 1" group. The guy that shot the 7mm08 through it said "part of the brass blew off". I looked at the case and saw 7mm08 and told him got lucky.

Once I had a customer come in with a shattered Weatherby Mk V rifle. The stock around the action/magazine area was splintered, totally trashed out. The action looked OK, but the magazine box was bulged out.

"Can you fix it?" he asked.

I explained that his best bet was to have Weatherby take a look at it, but he wasn't sure if he trusted Weatherby.

"It said 270 on the barrel, so I bought 270 ammunition at XXXXX, and the first time I fired it, it did this!"

I felt sorry for the guy. Somebody sold him the rifle, and didn't explain to him about the type of ammunition it required.

To this day, it amazes me that when he chambered a 270 Winchester round, somehow or another it ended up going off when he pulled the trigger.

We were both embarrassed as I explained what had happened.

I guess a .284 bullet will fit down a .277 barrel.

I wonder what kind of pressure that generated ?

...be interesting in what a Go/NoGo guage would show about the headspacing...

A guy I used to work with shot a 7Express round out of his SAKO 7Rmg...split the forend and reciever area of the stock and broke it at the wrist...he got a little trash in an eye - not wearing shooting glasses - with lots of splinters in his left arm and hand.

SAKO replaced the stock, 'cause the head spacing was still perfect after they beat it open with a wooden mallet...Close too Close a call for me or him.

Unless the brass was cleaned after the shot, looks like the brass sealed the gas out of the chamber. Bet it was a cup and core bullet they will squeeze down better than some other designs.

All in all the shooter got lucky with no injury and gun still intact.

Good reminder to always make sure you are using the right ammo.

It amazes me how often this happens. Do people just dump all their rifle ammo in a gallon Ziploc bag and head to the range? I keep my ammo in the case with the rifle at the range. I don't do it to keep it separate, it just makes sense to me to keep the rifle and the ammo together for convenience sake.

The other thing is, one is SA and one is LA. I guess I could understand it easier if it was a 270win and a 30-06 or something that shares a similar case.

I saw a 25-06 that had a 308 shot through it. Lots of pieces and some medical bills.

And the 270-7mm-08 is born! I wonder how many once-wildcats have been born the same way?

I was standing about 20 foot away when it was shot. He called me over to look at the brass.

The rifle is a Sendero I was trying to talk him into selling.....was.

Thanks for sharing. Makes me feel a lot better about the time I left the key to my bolt lock at home.

Saw a guy at the range one day shooting a Rem 700.
Had a box or two of 270 Remington factory Corelokts sitting on the bench.
He shot a whole box and some of them didn't hit the 8 1/2 x 11 target paper at 100 yards.
He asked me if I had any idea what could be wrong.
I walked over and looked at the rifle.
It was chambered in 30-06

You can get a nose job, a hair-piece, a hearing aid - but there just ain't no fix for stupid.

I used to own an 8mm-06. It came with a set of dies.

To form the cases, I would buy a box of 30-06 - and plink with them at short range. They worked OK for that, and I wound up with perfectly formed 8mm-06 cases!

Kind regards, charlesb

I am wondering how often this sort of thing happens. I know after the run on guns and bullets back in late 2012 and 2013, all of the stores around us sold out of the popular sizes of ammunition. You could still find the less popular rounds (45-70 and 32-20). i noticed for a bit .308 Marlin express was on the shelf and then all of a sudden it was ALL gone. I am wondering if someone saw the 308 and thought that it was 308 Winchester and snatched it up. Someone is probably sitting on a hoard of ammunition that doesn't fit.

I bought about 20 boxes of 308MX from a guy about a year ago that bought it on accident. It was the 140 grain that retails for almost $40/box. I talked him down to $12/box.
