how many believe in the 26 yd sight in method?

I believe in shooting the actual distance that you want your zero to be. I've heard way too many people tell me "well my old .270 is sighted in an inch high at 100 yards so it's dead nuts at 200" and then come to find out either 1- they just can't shoot or 2- their old 270 is 3 inches low at 200 and, they can't figure out why they aren't able to "drive tacks" at 200 yards. The way I see it is if a person wants a 200 yard zero on a rifle then zero it at 200 yards, and the same goes for any zero distance or gun.

For a bow, it's great! Try it for a rifle, and let me know how you do. You better understand sight height and trajectory very well make it work. If you sight in at 26, you will be about 3"-4" high at 100 yards, depending on several factors. The military has used the 25 yard sight in target for years, but it also accounts for the exact set-up with the 5.56 round. IMO, it's foolish to sight in at anything else than the distance you need to zero at.

A 26 yard zero is great if you want a 26 yard zero. If you want a 100 yard zero, shoot the rig at 100 yards. Same holds true for any other distance you want to be zeroed.

The height of the sighting plane above the bore is a bigger factor than many realize.

My 17HMR, when sighted in at 100 yards shoots low at 10 yards. - This is solely due to how high the scope sits above the bore.

Get a ballistics app to find out where your short range zero point should be. I have to admit that for a half century I really thought 25 yards was the right distance. I never bothered to actually check to see if that was right. Just last week, because of discussion on the forum, I pulled up the app and had a look. And I was shocked to find that I had been using bad data for half a century. That said, using the old 25 yard rule will mostly get you on paper at 100 yards, if your paper is big enough.

New scope mounting and depending on scope height I shoot 25 yards(most times get hit 2"low at 25) then get it dead on or preferred zero at 100. Saves me ammo and time.

What if you only have 26 yds to shoot in?

For rifle qual in the army, your target is basically a silhouette of a man from 50 out to 300 yards. So even if you screw up your 25 meter zero, you have enough wiggle room to overcome a mistake sighting in if your marksmanship fundamentals are good. Also, you are dealing with a sight height of about 3" or so!
Even still, few understand the reasoning-even (especially) many who are in charge. You are supposed to zero 1.5 cm low at 25m. You must confirm zero at 100 in the Army as well, but that is often overlooked and soldiers are expected to zero at 25 and qualify. This is usually with a m68 (a red dot) with like a 50m parallax setting. The parrallax error is so gawd aweful, that I can dial my rifle in at 25 yards and a single hole exactly 1.5 cm low, and the next guy can pick my rifle up and hit like 6" low and left with consistency! But you can't explain this to some people. You are expected to just perform.
I have had to qualify with another sm's rifle using a *lot* of kentucky windage. The upside to all this, is that your soldiers and NCO's on the ground learn the weapons really well. You get to that point where most dudes can pick up a 203, and walk it in on a 250-300 m target within 2-3 shots without a leaf sight.
With iron sights, we zero at 25 and the poi is supposed to be the same at 300 but if you don't confirm then it'll be a little off. At least with irons, you have two reference points and it eliminates the parralax factor.

For deer or any other kind of hunting, you can't zero at 26 and expect it to be within a 6" kill zone. I have seen dudes zero 1.5 cm low at 25 and be dead on at 100, and I've seen dudes zero 1.5 cm low at 25 and hit 2 feet high at 100. Most scopes have fixed parrallax settings at 100 yards, so I can only imagine what a difference it might make. "Your mileage may vary"

You are showing your ignorance....bore sighting is functionally limited to single shots or bolt guns. And the choice to NOT do it (bore sight) is perfectly valid. Initial sight-in @ 25 or so yards is a perfectly logical way of coarse sight in....to be followed by fine tuning @ 100 yards.
