I forget who asked me to post up a picture of my home-made tumbler but here it is.

Motor is 1/2HP, the aluminum bars are sleeved with RV water hose for grip and the pillow block bearings are el-cheapo's. I have used the 2 gallon gott cooler you see in the video as well as 5-gallon buckets with those screw-on lid adapters. The motor has never strained. Both bars are powered, the first from the pulley and the 2nd is 1:1 from the first with a friction belt. The green tape was to keep the friction belt from slipping off the end if it started to walk. It's not pretty but it worked flawlessly.

I do not use this setup anymore, it's collecting dust, but only because i switched over to ultrasonic for more simplicity. When I was SS cleaning though, this setup was perfect for 50 or 500 cases + steel. The trick is to use 3x the steel pins anyone else tells you to - you want things to roll not crash which is why so many people get peened up case mouths.

Anyway, here is the video for whoever it was that asked. I may have the parts list somewhere.

What are you using in the ultra sonic?

I've used the store mixes, some internet mixes and recently just some lemi-shine and water. I don't care about shine/cosmetics and 5 mins in the bath is enough to knock out the inside crud.

You running a unit with a heater? I've used the store stuff and it does good but leaves a film if not rinsed off right after so I just toss into a vibratory with walnut media.

yes it has a heater but i haven't turned it on.... I just pull them out after 5-10 mins, give them a good rinse with tap water and put them on a screen over my tub to air dry. They have water spots and don't look shiny and nice but the majority of carbon is removed and they shoot very consistently. I'm more and more leaning towards the crowd that likes a little carbon in the neck as well.

I have to say I'm of the same train of thought. That's the main reason I haven't jumped into the ss tumbling. I know a few old br guys that use a dry lube on necks before seating.

from my perspective i didn't notice any degradation from SS to quick ultrasonic cleaning and leaving some carbon in the neck. plus my life is full of time sucks so that was my motivating factor, reduced prep time. I did notice seating became a little smoother and consistent with a little love left in the neck. like i said, it shoots no worse, no better and it's less time so that get's my vote all day.
