Some of the people on here know that I'm a guide and outfitter based in Kerrville Tx. But my home currently is in east tx so I spend alot of time on the road . But anyway had a meeting with prospective group of clients today putting a package together and we were going down the list of hunts I had available. When a guy in the back said hey you got a place to squirrel hunt. Thinking he was joking , I said sure and I just happen to have opening weekend available. Next thing I know half the guys in the group are saying man I haven't squirrel hunted since I was a kid I want to do that . Well guess what I'm doing 2-4 of Oct lol you just never know.

Never met a hunter that hadn't hunted squirrels at least once as a kid, more likely as a staple type of fun hunt. I can see that up

No way, when I was younger we would go hunting, me and my dad. I would shot a tree rat and think hey that was something. Then that night we would have stew, It didn't catch up to me till years later. Wondered why we had meat in the stew and it didn't taste like beef. Oh well I made it. But I WILL not eat another one!!!

I have never squirrel hunted but from the people I have talked to said it is one of there most favorite past times.
If I didn't live in the desert I would give it a try some time.

Squirrel is good eats. Tastes like chicken if done right. One time I went to the ranch with my better half and said, we are not bringing any food. We will hunt and eat what we kill for the weekend. Of course she thought she was going hungry. About 5 squirrels and 4 cottontails we were good. Oh and a couple of catfish to round out the weekend.

Why would you not eat squirrel? Quit being a Nancy. Squirell is good.

yep, I grew up next to a small pecan orchard, maybe 50-60 trees. the owners were some of my parents best friends and encouraged my brother and I to kill every squirrel we could. There is no telling how many hundreds, if not thousands of squirrels we killed over the 18 years before I headed off to college. We would normally shoot 6-8, take them home & clean, hand to my mom who German fried pretty much everything. she would basically quarter them, roll in seasoned flour, place in a large cast iron skillet with a little bacon grease or crisco, low heat, place a lid on and let it cook for 10 or so minutes, remove lid & flip, replace lid. once the squirrel was done, remove and use the oil to make cream gravy. Really good eating!

or she would quarter, drop in a dutch oven with water, then make similar to biscuit dough, drop in with the squirrel, really good squirrel dumplings!

Couldn't agree more with the comments on squirrel fried squirrel makes the best cream gravy of any meat domestic or wild. And like a lot of people I got my start tagging along with my dad when I was a little feller, those things taught me alot about stalking and hunting. happy3

My in-laws had placed an off limits on squirrel here at the farm when I moved up here, so I've gone a few years without being able to enjoy shooting any. But now that the squirrels have decided that their new homes are the attic of the main house and the pool house, I've been given the green light to kill them this year...so I'll be enjoying fried squirrel, squirrel dumplings, and squirrel gumbo as often as possible up

They drive me nuts in Kansas loud as hell. Everytime I fantasize about a giant buck rustling the leaves behind me. It is a squirrel

My son loves it when we cook squirrel on the spit. Cover with olive oil minced garlic, salt and a little red pepper and let'em turn.

My dad threatens me over tree rats! Tells me head shoot them or don't shoot at all,no sense in wasting meat! Yeah he's a fan of eating them and loves a creek bottom with a few dens in it. My grand father like the heads cooked, guess there was some differences in where to aim between dad and grand pa.

I would love a place to hunt squirrels. Nothing better than sitting under a beautiful shade tree and napping hunting squirrel.
