The are still in their eclipse plumage and haven't plumed out yet. Chances are many of the birds you are killing and seeing killed are drakes.

Hard to tell them apart this time of year. I assume the birds with brighter blue and green feathers and bright orange feet are the drakes. They do not have the white or dark feathers on the head.

I would love to get a fully plumed BWT.

Yup the drakes tend to migrate first, easiest way to tell the drakes in the early season are the color of the legs and feet, drakes will be the yellowish orange ones.

Early season drakes have a solid white band on the wing. Hens & young ones have a very light broken line on the wing.

You can easily tell the drakes from the hens by looking at the wing patch. It isn't hard at all.

“It’s pretty distinctive, actually,” said Todd Merendino, Ducks Unlimited conservation programs manager in Texas. “The males don’t have that big white crescent on their head yet, but on their wings the males will have a really predominant white stripe. The females don’t have that.”

Merendino said another hint to sexing early season teal are their legs, with males usually having more yellow-tinted legs, and the female’s being more gray.

“Most people will say ‘I shot four females,’ but typically the adult males will come down first, so chances are good really early on that you may be shooting all males,” he said. “As you get later on in September, you’ll start getting younger birds and adult females coming down; the last weekend, you might be shooting all hens.”

The final clue in telling the drakes and hens apart involves looking at their bills.

“Usually the hens will have some kind of black dots on their bill, while the male bills will be more solid,” Merendino said. “Typically, once they’re in hand, that’s the best cue, because there is definitely a very distinctive white stripe on the males.”

You need to get one in the spring for a good mounter bird. Unfortunately it is not season. Look at what my little black bitch is holding. That was the last weekend of season that year.

You'll get it eventually. You just started duck hunting last year, after all.

Heavy white bar in the wing= drake.

If you want really good ones to mount-contact Derek Bendell in FL. You changed plenty of prime birds there.

A little longer than that.

I'd like to go early season teal hunting with you and watch you pick out the drakes.

And still probably harvested more ducks than half of you yahoos that act like you had to grow up in a duck blind to know what you are doing. It actually just takes a little common sense and a little trial and error.

That one has a collar on it's foot. You shoot somebody's pet?
