I finally got my hands on 1977 weatherby mark 5 delux model but I'm not sure with what loads to start with so any help would be helpful. The rifle is in perfect condition so it being shoot able is not a question its just my 300 weatherby.

Do you know what the twist rate it has? I believe some of the older wby caliber offerings came with relatively slow twist rates because they wanted to get the highest velocity and used lighter/shorter bullets.
Mine has shot 165 grain acubonds, 200 grain partitions, 180 grain barnes original x bullet, and 220 grain hornady round nose well. Its a 1:10 twist.

I'm not sure on the twist rate on this one but my uncle who bought it originally thought it was 1 in 12 but wasn't sure that was correct

Im going from memory from a couple years ago, but seems like the 1:12 twist is geared towards 150-165 gr rounds.

I got rid of mine due to the cost of ammo. Last time I checked it ran close to $100 for a box of 20. Looked into reloading also and found very little available at the time. They are nice guns though. I still have a Vanguard in 308 that is a tack driver.

I have a good friend with a .300 Weatherby MK5 of similar vintage to yours. He has hunted all over North America with that rifle & swears by it. He exclusively uses 165 Grain Barnes Triple Shock (factory ammo). He says very accurate & everything DRT.

I would try some 165-168s, we shoot 180s in ours but we are only using them for Elk. Several commercial loaders load for these because of the cost of factory loads. Try Chad on this forum. If you want to reload yourself I have over 100 rounds of brass. Some new and some 1X fired.

Less than 45 dollars a box from Weatherby- 150 grain Spitzer's. $2.25 a shot...for a 150 gr Spitzer .30 cal!? If you're a Weatherby owner you are either a hand loader, don't shoot much, or are wealthy!

Fair enough.
I hope you have a press and dies. That's crazy money for centerfire rifle ammo.

I hope you have a press and dies. That's crazy money for centerfire rifle ammo. Might seem crazy to you but there's allot of us that don't seem to mind at all. I might put 3 to 4 rounds a year through my 300's with at least 2 of those shot's just making sure it's still on. My 257 will see a little more since I put it in the truck once the leaves drop and I can see them yote's farther back in the brush line but even then it may see less than 20 rounds a year. Spending a little extra on good premium ammo doesn't bother me at all.

[If you're a Weatherby owner you are either a hand loader, don't shoot much, or are wealthy! When I was in college I got an invite to go varmit calling with a friend on his families place. I didn't have a rifle with me at school, but one of my buddies had just gotten back from a mule deer hunt and said I could borrow his... a Wby Mark 5 7mm wby mag. It was a slow night calling... really slow, I ended up shooting 2 raccoons with it, thought my buddy was gonna cry

I'll take your bait and yes I'll call it bait since he never said or even insinuated that. My answer would be yes but it's based on speed and not on name. Any 30 caliber pushing 150's over 3500 fps has an advantage over other 30 cals pushing 150's at lesser speed's. It's flatter, faster and more forgiving when it come's to judging distance or wind. Let's used two rifles both sighted in an inch high at 100 yard's. Take a 308 with a standard 3x9 scope pushing 150's and a 300 with a standard scope pushing 150's, no BDC's, no laser range finder's, no mildot's and put up a 12 inch gong at 400 yard's and give them one shot. I'll put my money on the 300 every time at that or any given distance using this combination.

I don't dispute that at all. Speed helps overcome gravity, and therefore bullet drop. That is very helpful when running the plain duplex reticle scope as you mentioned.
Weatherby users are cult like. Same as guys that shoot like me are cult like. More than one way to overcome gravity and (even more importantly wind). Different strokes for different folks.

Practice will trump marketing hype on a piece of paper. Practice only happens if the rifle is comfortable enough to actually use for practice.
A few rounds a year is not enough practice to reliably make a cold bore shot on a 12" target at 400 yards - with any setup.
The Weatherby rounds can be top tier performers, but require proficiency, which comes from practice, to yield an advantage.

A few rounds a year is not enough practice to reliably make a cold bore shot on a 12" target at 400 yards Who said it was? That's about all I put through those rifles per year, I never said that's all I shoot. Between my pistol's and truck rifles's I'll shoot 100 to 200 rds of various calibers a week. I'd have no problem making that cold bore shot with my 300 and most of the hunters I know could do the same with my rifle. It's not magic! In fact the chances of them hitting on the first shot would most likely be better than them hitting it on the second shot. Recoil shock will hit them on the second shot as well as trying to pre-guess the trigger.

No, it is not magic, it is proficiency, which only comes from practice. As for most hunters picking up a rifle and making a 400 yard cold bore shot - not talking about you - that seems unduly optimistic. Remember the "Time to Throw Down" thread you started a few years ago? There was lots of talk, but when all was said and done, there was lots more said than could be backed up on paper - and that was only a 200 yard challenge. It's worth a read again. http://texashuntingforum.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/2051030/1
