My 1987 Rugar M77 (tang safety) 280 started misfiring last year. I can see where the firing pin strikes the primer but it is not always with enough force to discharge the round. It always fired on the 2nd shell after I ejected the first and chambered another round. I spoke with Rugar and they said the bolt probably needed rebuilt with a new spring. Here's the rub, they (Rugar)no longer stock repair parts or service this model. Are there any gunsmiths in the Granbury/DFW area that can rebuild the bolt for me? Rugar said the parts were available from an outside source but this is way above my level of experience. Thanks, Bill Roberts 817-578-0051

Read the thread below, especially post #9. This might be an easy fix. Watch the video in the link, it shows how to easily remove the firing pin for cleaning. It is common for crud or pieces of primer to get stuck in the bolt. Remove the firing pin, and clean it and the bolt.

All metals fatigue over time and working metal such as spring's are the worst as the modulus of elasticity starts to go south over time, constant cycling or constant load is the culprit. Keeping a spring compressed over time will weaken it and that's what we see in hunting rifles. We'll load it, put it on safety and keep it that way all day, some handguns are always in that state. Replacing the spring and firing shouldn't be a tough job but I would still let a gunsmith do it. A new firing pin might be a little too long (possible) and will need to be fitted just to make sure. Piercing a primer is never fun!

I have a Ruger 77 MKII stainless .270win and I can tell you that taking the bolt apart and cleaning the inside of the bolt, spring and firing pin is rather easy and I do it once a year. - If you can change the oil in an truck then you have enough technical ability to do this.

1. Use the video posted above to disassemble the bolt and take some good solvent (Hoppe's 9) and a tooth brush and scrub down the entire firing pin/spring assembly.

2. Use a pistol cleaning rod and nylon brush with solvent to clean out the inside of the bolt; and run several solvent soaked patches through until its clean.

3. Spray off all the bolt parts and the bolt itself with gun scrub/ breakfree.

4. Relube all the parts with a LIGHT coat of good gun oil.

If you still have the same problem after you reassemble the bolt then you probably just need a new spring..... Which is $3.00
