I wanted to share a phenomenal experience I had with Jason (FiremanJG) at his long range shooting class at Precision Rifle Hunters (http://www.precisionriflehunters.com) this week. My business partner, Snake, and I took the day off on Wednesday and headed out for a full day session with Jason at his 800 yd range 75 miles NE of Dallas.

First off, I just want to say that Jason is a great guy. Very down to earth and enjoyable to be with. He was unbelievably knowledgeable about shooting techniques, ballistics, you name it. Very patient with questions. His facility was first rate. Private property off a county road without any traffic or distractions. Welded 6' ft tall shooting platform with wood deck and roof Even with a warm day in the mid 90s it was very comfortable. Range is set up with 100 yd paper target for zeroing and then burms with steel targets at every 100 yds out to 800 yds.

The day began with an 1-1.5 hour class on fundamentals -- body position, acquiring site picture, trigger control, follow through, etc. Then A thorough but easy to follow discussion of Mil vs MOA with an emphasis on how to calculate elevation needed, reading the wind, etc. Based on our ammo and observed/estimated muzzle velocity, we developed a trajectory chart using ballistics calculator on our smart phone.

Snake got behind his gun first. We were shooting .308 with Mil-dot reticles. Scopes have MOA turrets so we werent able to dial for elevation -- instead, Jason worked with us on elevation holds using Mil dots. A quick zero at 100 yds then progressed quickly banging steel from 200 yards out to 600 yds with Jason calling the elevation and the windage holds. 700 and 800 yards required a bit more work -- our reticles only had mildots that got us to 600 so the 700 & 800 targets required estimating the hold. I struggled a bit more than Snake, but Jason was patient with me and i eventually got out to 800 yds as well -- all before lunch time! Very helpful to have someone standing over you telling you what you are doing wrong and constructively giving advice on how to correct. We also shot our .270's with plain vanilla duplex reticles but we were still able to comfortably shoot 300 and even 400.Bottom line, not only did I have a great time, but i came away with a wealth of knowledge on how i can be a better shot and make my hunting more effective. Not that i would be taking 500+ yard shots on game, but after 700-800 yards, the 200, 300, and 400 yard increments were a breeze.

I highly recommend this class to anyone -- whether you are an experienced shooter or just beginning. Only problem is that now i have the itch to upgrade my gear to Mil/Mil scope and full custom rifle.

Thanks again, Jason!
