anyone had the opportunity to hunt whitetail on the matador? was chosen this year for the 2nd hunt (nov. 14th-18th). i believe they let the group chose their own compartment in the order they were picked. any suggestions on a good whitetail compartment. i'm leaning towards a river pasture if we have a choice. the guy that was on the application with me might not be able to go. seems like they are cutting timber on his place in indiana, and he thinks he has to be there. any suggestions on a compartment, or advice, will be appreciated.

I drew on the Nov 9 hunt. I know very little about the place. It seems that they will be allowing quail hunting starting oct31-nov 9. That tells me that the white tails are gonna be in the thicker patches. Hunting by the river sounds like a good initial plan.

I hunted hogs there a couple years ago. We got to choose your compartment based on the order in which hunters were drawn. I hunted a compartment on the Northern side that the Pease River ran through. I think was called Shorty. It had some pretty dense thicket between the river and the eastern border and I saw lots of deer there. And a ton of hog crap, although I only saw one hog.
Best of luck and have fun!

thanks, TxDiver. was it a winter hog hunt you were picked on? i went through Howe the other day, and saw a bunch of pigs right off of central expressway (us 75) north. before long, we'll have them in the suburbs of garland. have a great one, and best of luck hunting this year.

Also, bring a little ultralight spinning outfit and a few jigs and spinners. If there is water in the Pease, the fishing can be fun for little bass and bream in the deeper pools. Nice way to take a little break around lunch.

Between the river and the Turkey roosting area is a great spot and really thick. Most of the trees are too small to get up into.
