I finally got my hands on 1977 weatherby mark 5 delux model but I'm not sure with what loads to start with so any help would be helpful. The rifle is in perfect condition so it being shoot able is not a question its just my 300 weatherby.

Do you know what the twist rate it has? I believe some of the older wby caliber offerings came with relatively slow twist rates because they wanted to get the highest velocity and used lighter/shorter bullets.

Mine has shot 165 grain acubonds, 200 grain partitions, 180 grain barnes original x bullet, and 220 grain hornady round nose well. Its a 1:10 twist.

I'm not sure on the twist rate on this one but my uncle who bought it originally thought it was 1 in 12 but wasn't sure that was correct

Im going from memory from a couple years ago, but seems like the 1:12 twist is geared towards 150-165 gr rounds.

I got rid of mine due to the cost of ammo. Last time I checked it ran close to $100 for a box of 20. Looked into reloading also and found very little available at the time. They are nice guns though. I still have a Vanguard in 308 that is a tack driver.

I have a good friend with a .300 Weatherby MK5 of similar vintage to yours. He has hunted all over North America with that rifle & swears by it. He exclusively uses 165 Grain Barnes Triple Shock (factory ammo). He says very accurate & everything DRT.

FWIW...

Factory ammo can be easily had for less than $100/box. If you reload it costs you little more than 30-06.

I would try some 165-168s, we shoot 180s in ours but we are only using them for Elk. Several commercial loaders load for these because of the cost of factory loads. Try Chad on this forum. If you want to reload yourself I have over 100 rounds of brass. Some new and some 1X fired.

$2.25 a shot...for a 150 gr Spitzer .30 cal!? eek2

If you're a Weatherby owner you are either a hand loader, don't shoot much, or are wealthy! grin

you don't shoot coyotes, bang steel or cull does with them. you shoot them when you need something very dead very quick

So you can hit what you want, as far as you want, more often than a non-Weatherby owner? popcorn

it has nothing to do with range

speed kills. a 110 grain bullet leaving the barrel at 3500 fps does magical things.

also helps a tad, tad bit if I misjudge the range by 50-75 yards if the animal is way out there

Fair enough.

I hope you have a press and dies. That's crazy money for centerfire rifle ammo.

Might seem crazy to you but there's allot of us that don't seem to mind at all. I might put 3 to 4 rounds a year through my 300's with at least 2 of those shot's just making sure it's still on. My 257 will see a little more since I put it in the truck once the leaves drop and I can see them yote's farther back in the brush line but even then it may see less than 20 rounds a year. Spending a little extra on good premium ammo doesn't bother me at all.
