Going third season. Will be hunting public land near Somerset that is almost inaccessible except by entering through private land. No ATV's allowed. I'll have a cow tag and a bull tag. Just curious if any of you guys have hunted that area and what I can expect?

I know many of the elk will be headed down Gunnison river towards Paonia. They usually stay in the foothills and head into the agricultural fields around Paonia, used to see them quite thick in there. A lot of activity by the Coal mine, but have even seen Sheep in there a few times. Most everything around Paonia is PL though.
Some rough country, I would glass the opposite canyon walls and the bottoms, they will get in there like ticks after 1st and 2nd season pressure.

Hmmmm, stupid question possibly here.... How are you going to get to the park service land if it's landlocked?
We went to unit 52 (I think) many years ago and I remember some fellas at the park headquarters complaining that the unit they were in was totally landlocked (nobody would give permission to cross their property), so they wanted to know if they could change units. Colorado was the biggest joke I have ever seen! Subdivisions bought land from the BLM or Forest Service and made it private which made the land accessible to themselves but nobody else.

I have seen several areas of BLM, or state school land like that, makes it easy for the LO to use it .

I don't know near enough about what the elk are doing there to offer much advice. I have a couple of buddies who deer hunt it 2nd/3rd and they see a lone bulls and small groups of cows with raghorns in the SW portion of the unit. We don't share exact locations, but I know them well enough to know they are hugging private.

We rented a cabin on private property that borders the national forest.

Ouch, we use to have a cabin that boarded NF. Private blocked most access unless you came in from the other side of the mountain in another unit.

Google Gunnison Lake (Images) and see if that first one that pops up gives you any ideas.

I live and hunt in paonia area which is a little west of there. Good huntin fair amount of public towards paonia but lots of hunters that season though. If the year keeps goin the way it is now should be able to hunt fairly low. I'll be out huntin that season pm if you have questions
