Hey everyone, I'm planning on making a visit to Texas around Christmas time. Growing up in Texas I never got the opportunity to duck hunt then I moved to California and got into duck hunting. I'd like to get out and do a little duck hunting while I visit and maybe get my dad out there with me and the girl friend if she makes it out with me. Home is about 30 minutes east of Dallas and have found a couple possible spots close by. Just curious if anyone has had any luck in that area at all?

You'll catch more bees by not naming lakes.

Lots of public hunting on lakes around dfw but you're not gonna get much help on here. Also with the lakes now full it's a new game versus last few years. I live by Ray Roberts which is type 2 hunting but lots of trucks there on the weekends. The further you get away from DFW the better you will be or if at all possible hunt weekdays. Figuring out which lakes have public hunting isn't hard but finding the right spot can be.

There are a lot of places to hunt waterfowl in N Texas. The caveat being there are 50,000,000 duck hunters in N Texas. If you want to treat your father and girl to a memorable hunt, there are some great guides in our area. If you want do it the old fashioned way, get the APH public lands book or better yet hit the TPWD website and search for public hunting. It has a wealth of information on area lakes, rivers, and WMA's that allow the hunting of waterfowl.

I'm sure you know this but I'll say it anyway. Scouting water, putting in the time and effort to find birds and learn the lay of the land, will give you the knowledge you're seeking. If you don't have the time or the patience, a guide will give you plenty opportunity to shoot a duck. Oftentimes witha better chance of success if you have a limited of time.
