A friend wants to build an AR-15 and after we do that I would like to look into building an AR-10 (when I get the funds). It appears that we can buy kits for an upper and lower that will save some cash (over buying a brand name rifle). My questions are:
1) What brands or retailer should we be considering?
2) Is this as simple as buying a good quality upper and lower or are there kits for the complete rifle? Or is there a situation where we buy an upper, a lower kit minus the receiver and a separate receiver?
The options are huge. Some advice before jumping into this would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Easy budget. Gotta figure what you really want it to be good at, read a lot, buy once.

Pass the gravy.

This is the answer to your question. $40-50 stripped lower added and you're set.

This. Most any Mil-Spec receivers will be fine.

Palmetto State Armory is the best deal going in AR15 and AR10 rifle kits right now.

Seems AR's are trending shorter and lighter, I got on this band wagon lately with a Seekins Precision.

Look at Battle Arms Development, Cobalt Kenetics,

The Colt basic rifles were running in the $800 range. Why not just buy one of those?

For $800, I'd buy a factory Colt and call it a day.

I assumed he was talking about his budget for the AR-15. For a value build, you can't beat PSA (for the AR-10). If the AR-15 budget is $800, I'll still recommend the Colt. That being said, you can get a PSA build kit for cheap and it's a great value as well. Buddy at work built a PSA AR-15 and it shoots very well.

Just noticed you said AR-10...

Ive seen quite a few 6920s for $799 last month or two. I don't know if they were running a sale to take attention away from the bankruptcy or what.

Grabagun.com has some 6920s for $850, 6920mpbs for 900, and ones without furniture for less than 800 right now.

http://grabagun.com/search/?q=colt+6920

I bought my Colt a few years ago for $1064, if I remember correctly.

You can get a DPMS LR-308 for $799 if you shop around and I can get full billet build kits complete with lowers for under $600 that are made in Texas.

Going to be getting another kit very soon. I built the 16 inch mid with the stainless barrel and it is nice.
