What am I missing. I have seen people pay upto 10K for a trophy hunt here in USA vs going to Africa and getting about 7-8 trophy hunts. With travel and lodging etc a friend of mine goes to african hunts every other year with his parents and its still under 10K for the whole trip for family of 4.

for example

Not all hunting in Africa is plains game on a game ranch in South Africa. Although, this is a great experience, hunting elsewhere, and especially any dangerous game, is considerably more expensive.

This hunt you linked to requires full payment 6 months in advance of the hunt. That seems unusual. Daily rates paid in full 30 days in advance is the norm.

thats just an example, but those tiny details could be ironed out. As I mentioned my friend and his family goes every other year so I dont think thats an issue. There's still a huge disconnect in pricing here

You say people pay "up to" $10K here. What do they pay "up to" in Africa? You can find a cheap hunt anywhere.....the devil is in the details.

You have to remember there are a lot of people that are cash rich and time poor. Also because of dipping, packing, and other miscellaneous fees, African hunts, cost more than the Safari rate and airfare. I would also add at least two days on each end for travel so a 7 day Safari is more like nine days.

for every stereotype there's a prototype don't be the prototype

$10K will not cover
that taxidermy/shipping bill.

No, there's not a disconnect. You are comparing apples to aardvarks. The cost of doing business here is many times higher than the cost there. Labor, taxes, land prices, supply costs, infrastructure costs etc.

The prices are a bargain here AND there. The free market works that way.

I would spend $10k here any day on a hunt before I went to Africa. Just me but no interest in hunting Africa.

I think a key element to the OP are the words "with his parents". There's a lot of extra expenses getting lost in the translation, one way or another.

Almost every time I'm waiting to board the last leg home in Jo'berg, I'll overhear at least one guy telling another hunter that he killed X number of animals in X number of days. Like it's some kinda contest. That's not the reason I'm over there.

No, you are not missing any thing as long as you include airfare and the extra hotel accommodation of one night on each end in Joberg. You will probably need to pay for a gun transfer service too, or else be hit up for bribes. Also, the paperwork and trips required to get your paperwork done here, and the voluminous form you have to fill out for South Africa can be a factor for some.

Some people (as someone noted above) are constrained by time, but not money, so Africa isn't in the cards for them. If you've got the time, then go to Africa.

I'm going one last time next year and then I'm done with that BS.

You can get a really great lease in Texas for $5000-10000 and hunt all year, that's a lot of bang for your buck.

Talk to your buddy's parents and get back to us. You will be surprised once you dig a little further.

Again I just feel the disconnect here is only the cost of running business/labor here vs there. No big deal.

How much did it cost for caping/salting/prepping/shipping back to USA on all the animals taken? I know what it cost me to get just 2 Red Stags back from NZ. crazy

Well, you don't have to take any trophies. There's no requirement to do so.

+ Paying a clearing house/broker at the airport to meet USFWS, unless they did it themselves.

And tipping, don't forget tipping. PH, trackers, cooks, camp managers, room maids, skinners.

Agreed I spent more on other than our hunt, but with airfare, gun fees, overnight in jberg, ship and dip, taxidermy there, taxidermy here, tips for ph 10% pretty standard, staff, and skinners, trackers, global insurance, that 10k figure you were given is way off.

6500 hunt, 1k tips, 1k at taxidermy there, 2k to ship home, 2500 for plane, gun permits and global insurance 500, 500 if pay broker here, and then 4-5k minimum taxidermy bill, overnight outside hunting $200, a lot more than the 6500 just sayin

I've hunted plains game in South Africa and Namibia and I agree that I don't understand why somebody would spend so much on a single animal here in Texas compared to getting several animals in Africa for the same amount. It must be a time thing where you can get to the ranch in Texas in a lot less time, avoid dealing with airports and customs. If I just wanted one single animals, like a Kudu, it might make sense to hunt Texas and pay the higher cost for it here, but since I wanted a Kudu and a Gemsbok and so many other animals, it was time well spent going to Africa.

There are really just two more animals from Africa that I really want. A cape buffalo and a sable. I've seen a few deals on sable here in Texas that if I had the cash, might have done. I've never seen a deal on cape buffalo in Texas that would make me consider hunting one here. But even if I did, I wouldn't take it because that's one animal that I really want to hunt in Africa and think that a big part of it is the entire experience of getting there, and then taking the time to find him out in the wild.
