This is what I think I know:
280 AI is basically a 280 Rem (7mm-06) which is form-fired and a 40-degree shoulder angle instead of 35.... I think? Performance gets damn close to a 7mm mag, but the recoil and muzzle blast is greatly reduced, it is ultra reloader friendly, there's a good bullet selection, and barrel life (not that it really matters to me) is solid.

Here's the thing, I'm looking to get a gun for all-around mountain hunting rifle (to actually sit in my safe, but keep telling all my friends that I actually plan to go some day) and I want something ultra light weight. My local gun shop as a used Kimber Mountain Ascent with a Zeiss Conquest on it for a steal. My question is, what is the recoil comparable to and should I be concerned with such a light weight setup. I am guilty of shooting weighted rifles, so I'm dragging my feet a bit.

I was initially thinking about the Adirondack in a .308 > 7mm-08. 7mm-08 is a round that seems awesome as well (though I've never harvested game with it) but the .308 seems better suited on the high end for elk, the short action gin is lighter, and I have more options with breaks and such. Just Saw the 280 AI for a good price, and now I'm thinking about kicking it up a notch with it.

Any input is appreciated of curse! =]

Ok first send me the info on the 280 AI smile. In that light gun it should have more punch than a 30-06, but it would make an awesome pack rifle.
I do believe there is a couple guys on here with that rifle hopefully they will chime in.

Rifle Recoil Calculator- http://www.handloads.com/calc/recoil.asp

The 280 AI is a great round. I have made some really good loads with it. There's nothing wrong with a 308, either. I know several elk hunters who use nothing but that, and shoot elk at longer ranges. Either will work.

You found a 280 A.I. at a great price. Well then buy it, I am quite sure you will be very happy with it.

It is just this simple:

Caliber choice
Bullet weight of choice
How fast do you want it to go?
Does the cartridge typically have a low ES?

So the answers with the cartridge in question are:

7mm
168 gr (what I'd do)
I think the 280 A.I. will push it 2900 fps MV
Yes, they are known consistent shooters

Brake choices are no limiting factor, get any type brake you want.

Sounds like a great gun, particularly if you're just using it for hunting. Grab it!
