First trip to Lake City was August of 1968. A few Texans and a few folks from Oklahoma had found it. Went back for several summers. Could tell a lot of stories of that old mining town and its "unique" folks.

When you get to Lake City, post a picture of the front of Miners Bank on the corner of Silver Street and I will give you a story about the bar and hotel that used to be there. It gets fun when the owner's wife finally tracks him down.

Stop by sportsmans backyard. They are a gas station/restaurant/concert venue. Great food and great people. Love lake city!!!!!! Fishing is pretty good around there too.

Lake City is a good place. I was a kid when I made my first trip there in 1977. I have been back a few times since.

Just rolled into town. They are having a big ATV/SxS gathering and allowing them to ride through town. Pretty nice place. Cool 51 degrees

How far is Lake City from Co Springs? A couple hundred miles or more. It is on the Western Slope south of Gunnison but the most scenic approach is from the south through Creede which take you over Slumgullion Pass.

I pulled the truck over on the shoulder and saw one of the best rainbows ever. Pics will come shortly

Coming off Slumgullion, there is a downhill stretch with a left turn that takes you past a deep valley below. Absolutely nothing to your right but air for a couple of thousand feed down or more. No pull off close but if you can find a place to stop and hike back to the curve, you can see the remains of a Greyhound style bus in the meadow below. Was never recovered. Left for nature to claim. Was there long before my travels and my contacts did not know the story of the bus.
And to keep this on topic, since this is the PHOTO section, you will be right in the middle of a fabulous photography site.

Went several years ago. One of my favorite places.
Cruise the toy up to Big Blue for the day. Be sure to pack a lunch and rain coats. It's about 7-8 miles up the mountain. The scenery is breathtaking and the fishing is good too.

Ok AEB, lest here the story!
The the bar crowd in the 60’s was an interesting mix. There were a few itinerant gypsies like myself, wandering the mountains, soaking up the scenery, the culture…and the bourbon. Folks from Texas were just beginning to discover this little piece of God’s Country, so there were always a few trout fishermen in the crowd. Some of the folks from “upstairs” were characters unto themselves. One couple I will never forget. They were from New York City and out to see the Wild, Wild, West. How else to experience the West but to dress Western? Each night they came down from their hotel room dressed in “western” attire. Roy Rogers and Dale Evens from head to toe, minus the hat. Roy Rogers would never wear a hat to dinner. Most of the upstairs guests came down “dressed” for dinner but took their drinks in the restaurant ….Guess they didn’t want the common folks to rub off on them….and some us were pretty common! We were the itinerants, the passers through….the real customers had a time honored place at the bar. The miners occupied most of the barstools. Grizzled, rough around the edges, mostly unshorn, some young, some old. They knew each other well; they knew each other’s problems and successes in life. They were both the character of the saloon and the character of what Lake City had once been. Each night, I watched and listened to their conversations. I felt that I was witnessing a piece of Colorado and American history that was passing in the night.
In the late 1960’s, a young man from the Midwest and his attractive young wife came to Lake City and saw an opportunity. They bought the old bank building and began its restoration. Soon the bar/hotel/restaurant combination was the pride of Lake City. The first day I was in Lake City, my friend that owned the Riverside recommended the restaurant and saloon. The owner and his wife were well respected and held in high esteem by the business leaders of Lake City for their efforts to improve their community. He was a quiet man; small in stature and never one to brag about his accomplishments….or discuss his past. But that was all to come to an end. It seems that he had neglected to do something. Like divorce his wife! Apparently he had disappeared in the night, hoping to never be seen again. He left behind a big raw-boned swede that was a heck of a looker. She towered over him as she did most everyone else. A Mutt and Jeff combination. It took her a year or so but she finally tracked him down in Lake City. They say there was quiet a scene when she walked into the restaurant and confronted her husband. Obviously the young man must have been a good businessman, considering his success with the business but Wife #1 was a pretty shred cookie also. She had already cased the situation and had her own plan. First thing she told “husband” was for him to get his ^^^^ back in “his” bar and never come through the door again. The second thing she did was to tell “Sweet Thing” to pack her bags and get her ^^^^ out of my “hotel and restaurant” today.
When I was in Lake City a few months later, there was a quiet young man running the bar and a big-boned Swedish lady serving great steaks next door….and the place was crowded. The scandal passed quickly…a man’s past is seldom discussed in a mining town.
There you have it. The story as told to me by the former owner of the Riverside Resort in 1968.

Drove almost 900 miles home yesterday, didn't think my dad was going to get in the truck, he was very serious about staying up there and buying a cabin. Trip was a blast, put over 130 miles on the Teryx in 2 days. And now for the pics. Slumgullion Pass rainbow  Mule deer in town
