Not trying to stir up trouble, but interested in getting y'all's opinion. Thinking about getting a family/retrieving dog down the road and wondering which you prefer and why. My BIL, an avid hunter whose owned /trained several bird dogs prefers females. Guy at work prefers males. Any real data/ experiences that would back either view. Characteristic differences that gives one the nod over another? Trainability? Temperment? Thanks

Unless you have another dog at home, I don't think gender is a great predictor of temperament. There are going to be dominant/submissive or social/loners of each. However, in my limited experience with about 10 labs, females can be a little sweeter with the family, but you also run the risk of getting a B*&@#. While the males I've seen are all loyal to their master to a fault, but some may not be quite as social with the rest of the family.

Any trainer out there is going to have more experience/better advice than me though.

Personal preference.

I'll take a Black Female every time.

My first ever was a female. Ive stuck with them. They've always held their own against males.

Had both and the males seem to be a bit more hard headed when it comes to training. Haven't had as many problems
with the females. All were good family dogs.

It's literally personal preference in my opinion. I have read several studies on this. Some studies say the males are sometimes "sweeter" or more lovey than the females. But I think it just depends on the dog. I have only had males but I know very affectionate and fabulous females as well.

I personally think it's not that scientific and I really think it comes down to if you want your dog lifting his leg to pee on every bush or if you don't. Also, males GENERALLY can me larger. But definitely not always. And a well bred puppy if either sex can both be outstanding in the field and home.

I prefer male dogs. More aggressive while hunting, more protective, etc.

You might have to deal with marking, dominance issue more with males than females.

This last male broke me of ever thinking about having another male. Since he was a pup he was strong headed and constantly testing. He was a great hunter but worked me to death keeping him under wraps.

My black bitch has been the sweetest, never testing and had the strongest retrieve drive of any dog I have owned.

I'll take a little spotting a time or two over a dog that has to lift his leg and wiz on evrrything.

alot more males than females become fc AFC but females also have heat cycles and they miss running trials and sometimes training during. then some are bred and they miss time running trials due to pregnancy then while whelping.

A field bred dog might not fit your hunting, home, or training ability. That was just the first thing that came to mind.

I have both right now. I prefer females over males. The reason is I hate a dog that marks everything. I like to pet my dog and when they want their belly tickled, something gets in the way on the males.

If you don't want a heat cycle, fix the dog. Izzy went through several heat cycles before I fixed her and it wasn't an issue. Possibly if you fix a male young enough he may pee like a girl.

I'm willing to bet it is because it is easier to put in the effort into a male to stud out a dog multiple times a year for a better return on investment, than risking breeding the female.

As a result there are a lot more males competing so it looks like males are the winners.

When it comes down to it, it's personal preference and they each have benefits. My favorite is a spayed female.

Not field dogs, but all my dogs, all my life, have been males until I got Izzie. She's the best dog ever. Changed my mind for sure. She's alpha over the two males in her pack. She is spayed.

For a hunting/family lab, black with balls. I've owned a bunch of versatile dogs and had some good females over the years. For labs seems like the black males have something the females I've owned (had all three colors) just never had (other than balls). That's my experience with an admittedly small sample size.
