I'm in a new lease in the area this season, and I'm curious if anyone of you guys has any previous experience there. Thank you.

Hey Luke,

Your in a good area. Nice big bucks there. If your in high fenced area you'll do more than ok. Keep in touch.

There's a high fenced ranch along one side of the lease. The rest is low fence.

I still need to set up a camera at this lease. I've never hunted two different places in one season. This is going to be interesting since our ranch is a two hour drive away from the new lease.

We hunted a 700 acre place and 1000 acre place in outside of Roma in late 1970s-early 1980s. Some decent deer back then, nothing too great. Sure it's changed a lot over the years. Was better when got off the beaten path a bit. Lots of varmints, coyotes, a Mexican grey even spotted by TPWD and rumors of a panther back then too eating stray dogs except for the feet. Like anywhere else, the deer have to be permitted to mature..

I had a lease there in 2001, real close to the big aerospace balloon. Was a small place that I jumped in at the last minute. Never saw an animal and almost everything I had down there got stolen, was a learning experience for me. There are some good deer in that country though if you can get on a decent place.

It's going to be interesting. I've heard a few crazy stories about people going through those ranches. And I'm not talking about undocumented immigrants either.

Funny you mention this Captain, my Dad was going out there to tend to some stolen tires off the trailer as told to him by the landowner and from the time he hit the county road and took a look at the trailer until he returned, a guy with 6 bullet holes to the chest had been dumped on said county road near Roma. Be careful and watch your Ps & Qs., some danger in that area as you've been told.

Wow! That's not good. I will just stay out of anybody's business and just keep to the deer hunting. I don't want any problems. But I'll definitely be packing more than just my deer rifle and pistol. Just in case

I caught some nice bass in the river in Starr County. Rio Grande City, right? Used to camp and fish there when I lived in McAllen. Lived through all the trips, never saw anything to worry me.

Sorry Bud, story was very, very true and reported into the Sheriff in Rio Grande City by my Dad. He was escorted by the Sheriff and questioned onsite. Like I said, back in early 1980s so a lot may have changed by now, likely for the worse..

I get to hunt on the Saenz Family Ranch about once a year. There have been no problems there. The Ranch is about 7 or 8 miles North on Ebony lane from town. 20 years ago we would hear talking at night but not any more. You can hear the Drug helicopter flying at night looking, lights out. Last year photo.
