I will be down in your great state of Texas next week to do some hog hunting. What rifle do you all recommend for hogs? Is a 243 big enough?

I like a 30-06 for hogs. that said any gun that's shoots is worth shooting at hogs. I have taken them with several different guns .223/ .243/ 30-30/ 12gage.

I recommend .270 or bigger for shots behind the shoulder. .223 and .243 are fine for head shots. Regardless of how you want to look at it, a bigger caliber increases your odds of finding it.

Thanks for all the information. I'll bring along my 300 short mag, I heard the snakes are as big as the hogs down there? I'll be in the Lake of the Pines area but really have a clue where to go? Open for suggestions?

Thats region 5 not an expert... Thats pretty good area... Most is privet land... Yagh, gotta know the people, & then still might not get permission... Their is some WMA or public hunting land... Thats were i hunt whin want ta get a hog... In OP ya said, be here next week... Dont believe any of WMA in region 5 are open for rifle hog hunts.. So thats out.. warm weather, their will still be snakes... Warmer years have seen snakes at WMA year round... Very few people get bit, not bad idea ta hunt with a buddy just incase... Theirs several that offer hunts, warm weather night hunts way ta go.. A lot depends on hunting pressure, At my feeders it was around two months before seen hogs on cam... Got a boar, havent seen any on cam, did see tracks taday though.. Havent checked pic's.... And as some one mentioned bigger cal, is better... .243 will do the job... Drink plenty of fluids... Best wishes...

When you shoot a hog and he drops, reload and stay on him unless trying to immediately shoot another. They can lay there for 20 minutes, get up and walk away. Then you look back and have no idea what happened

Have killed many with 22-250, 243 AND 30-06. think you will be fine with 243 or something comparable. shoot them in the head.

If you are comfortable shooting your 243 it will work fine..

.243 will work... use good bullets and stick with head shots and you'll have drt.

Head or neck, DRT. Shoulder or behind the shoulder, you may find them, you may not find them.

As other posters have said, shot location is critical, regardless of the caliber you decide to use. Study this image:

As other posters have said, shot location is critical, regardless of the caliber you decide to use. Study this image: are worth a thousand words... Not ta bore ya... If ya done any deer archery, most Pro's, i'm not an expert, will tell ya best shot is slight quartering away heart & lung... From tree stand, i'e had luck 10-12' with good concealment.. Higher elevation have ta put pin higher for entry wound & ta take both lungs, specialy on close shots... Deer will run, & leave good trail as broad head, like the bullets that built ta expand expand... Bigger cal, larger diamiter, bigger entry wound... Hogs not realy built for running great distance like deer... If hog standing still, can take smaller kill shot... Type hunting i've done, close range, thick area, not alot of time ta react, heart lung is bigger target, center mask... Been lucky, hogs only went several yards, were they feel safe, have had great sucsess on recovrry... First 3 hogs, good trail, with 30-30 little farther distance, bigger diamitor, better trail, bad chooten my part... not best at explaining.. Had good teachers... hate it whin page jumps... i got cheap posts. Edit: have you found place ta hunt? They have an. outfitters section on here.. Hunten in stand over corn, not bad way ta go, if limited on time...
