I finally drew an archery tag. The last time I hunted there was when it wasn't draw. My question is do they draw certain areas for each hunter to hunt or can a man hunt the whole place? Thanks

At Matador they will bring you in and let you pick the compartment you want in the order that you were drawn. Only 8 permits so you could be first thur last. Good luck a great place to hunt.

I hunted there twice, once before it was draw and once on a stand-by permit. On the stand-by permit I followed one of the biologist in my truck and he took me to my compartment and loosely explained where the boundaries of the compartment were. Could have put a stalk on a couple of bucks but they were well below the 4 X 4 minimum rack size.

it is a great place to hunt, the bow hunt is a lot harder, we have drew it a few times and the bow hunt is a tuff hunt, you need a lot of luck on your side. Seen plenty of MD in all the compartments, just hope the weather is good, if it rains to much you may not be able to get across the river to a compartment if you get one over there. But its nice out there weather you get one or not, its just nice to see the animals. We could of filled out on nice mature deer but they did not have the 4 pt restrictions, congrats on the hunt, we missed out again on it this year.

There is a windmill on the north side that is great for setting up. I would pay attention to that detail.

Chunky monkey, I am headed to Matador on 11/9 for gun deer es. Do you have any compartment suggestions? There will be quail hunters there oct31- Nov 8. This might push deer to cover?

Joshua and I hunted next to a windmill on the NW part of Matador for youth spring turkey. Saw 6 WT, 3 MD, and 25 turkey in the hour we were there. Lots of activity at that location.

I use to see the biggest mule deer of my life every time I went quail hunting there. He never ran away even when my dogs approached him. I easily could have taken him with my bow. I probably saw him on 4-5 different hunts. He looked like one that belonged on the front of a magazine.

Thanks for the info palehorse, you're saving me one heck of a drive! I spent my youth hunting in Smith county where there no deer at the time. I sure don't wanna do that!
Guess we'll have to hope the seas are low and come down and run out to intersection for some Grouper! They taste better anyway.

My pleasure. Just wanted to save everyone from getting a nasty case of chiggers of their privates.
