I was trimming brush in and around the feed pens this weekend and wondering how you guys handle. Some of these mesquites we dozed last year are 20 stem bushes now. What is the most cost effective way to knock them down forever? I believe Remedy has been mentioned but not sure I need a $90 bottle. Anything else I can spray on them that is cost effective? Does diesel work fine in a 3 gallon pump sprayer?

Mix 12oz of Remedy with a couple gallons of diesel. Spray all leaves, let it soak for a week or so then come back and cut them at the ground. Whatever you do, don't mow the mesquite down like that idiot on the cables commercial... You will have flat tires in all your vehicles. And they will spread into bushes it's the worst thing you can do. Spray and burn, it's a proven method. Best of luck, it's an uphill battle

In order to get rid of the thorns, I do the cut stump method (and remove the tree) with Crossbow herbicide, diesel, and some blue dye. Cut the trunk then treat. The dye will show you where you've sprayed to ensure saturation. This has worked well on mesquite and salt cedar at my place.

I spray with a Remedy/water mix as stated on the label for foliar mixture on brush. Get every leaf wet and it works great. I mix Remedy/diesel as stated on the label mix rate for basal treatments. I spray as per direction around the base of the trunks only of each. I prefer the water mix for feed pens vs having the diesel smell in my pens.

I use remedy or clear pasture. They both work, but I have found when dealing with re-growth one application does not typically kill it all. It will kill the top but it will be back next year.

We have always used the Remedy/diesel mix and sprayed the bottom 12" all around the base. Kills the whole bush and I come back later with a machete or chainsaw to knock down and drag off.

Expect to have to do maintenance annually. It should be no big effort once the big stuff is gone.

Just remember spraying diesel is illegal, watch out for tree huggers! Thier trolling everywhere looking to stare trouble!

This is the big thing. If you turn your back on it the brush country will swallow it back up in a heart beat! The 1/2 section next to our place was irrigated row crop with a pivot when we bought the place in a few years time it has become very grown up.

This was what my late father did and it worked. He would cut a mesquite off right at the root. Next get some used motor oil which we always saved when we changed our own oil. Pour it right on the root or stump at ground level. The amount depends on the size of the root and the tree. This will give you about a 95% kill rate and they won't come back. The one thing about brush and mesquites is they have to be constantly kept up with or they will get out of hand because animals will always spread the seed.

Napalm, usually you only have to use it yearly.
