I was shooting a known load to sight in my new scope and also the first time out with the bipod. I know, I know, one change at a time but it never crossed my mind. I checked all scope mounts when I got home. The scope is a SWFA 5-20HD mounted in NF rings mounted by SWFA. I checked action screws and all are tight. The bipod is a Harris. The stock is manners so I think stock flex is out. Can my lack of experience with a bipod open a .25 gun up to .5-1 MOA? Or should I look elsewhere?

I should note this rifle is new and now has exactly 100 rounds through it. The consistent good groups were rounds earlier on. Maybe I need to start over on load development?

Are you pushing forward and "loading" the bipod?

Clean it with JB bore paste mixed with Prolix...then wipeout. Run some clean patches thru. Shoot to foul and see it gets back in line...I'df it doesn't stop drinking coffee and dr peppers...does not take much to open a group from .25 to .5, I wish I could hold that still. When I was 25 yes....it's a lot harder at 39..,

Have you cleaned it recently? On a new barrel, you will need to clean more frequently until the barrel gets seasoned in. It could be a number of things causing larger groups, so it's hard to know without knowing full details of everything you are doing.

Have not cleaned. It's a stainless obermyer 5R. How aggressive of a solvent should I use. I'm hesitant to use any of the aggressive paste cleaners. Remove copper fouling? The strongest thing I have is butch's bore shine. I'm erring on the side of caution.

Red Chevy. Same load. Same lot of new nosler brass. Same box of Amax. Same can of varget. Same OAL. Same box of primers.

You will want to clean it some. I also use Butch's Bore Shine. It's a great solvent. With a pointed jag, put about 3-4 wet patches down the barrel, and scrub a little on the last 1 or 2 patches. Follow that up with 2-3 dry patches. You don't want all the copper fouling removed, but you want to clean some stuff out of the barrel. Fire 2-3 fouling shots, then shoot another group, and I'll bet that will solve your problem of larger groups. Brand new barrels need more frequent cleaning until they get seasoned in. After about 150 rounds or so, you'll notice an improvement being able to shoot more rounds before it needs cleaning. Know your rifle, and know what it's capable of, and clean it before you reach that point. My 6.5 will go 150-200 rounds, but my 300 WM will go about 75 rounds before it needs a slight cleaning to get my groups back.

First try the rifle from your bench and see of still getting those .25 groups, if you get those tiny groups look to the shooter for what to correct, if the groups have opened up from the bench most likely it is the shooter/shooting form.

I know some days I shoot better than others.

Kmon you are correct about good days and bad. I let someone else shoot it that day as well. His groups were no better than mine.

I think I'm going to clean then foul then start over.

Going to shoot a friendly competition on the 12th. Shooting 2" clays at 300 and 600. If I can't do better than this I guess I'll be beer maid that day.

That ain't no lie, the 1/3 MOA! It's doable, but even with a consistent rifle shooting .25MOA that's going to be very very hard

When we shot out at Tac Pro and had the clay pigeon shoots, they were at 400 yards. With the weird winds out there, the 2" are small for 400 yards. I'd bust some and have a few clean runs, but it was challenging for sure.

Well it's going to be easy to keep score then. 40 shots total. Bobby will win and the rest of us will drink beer.

I remember your bipod mound was shaky on the cant. That is not helping the situation, in addition to what these guys recommended.

2" clays @ 600 yards? Better come with clear eyes and a clear head!

There will be 4" clays at 600 as well. The 2" will be for bonus points.

What ChadTRG had to say on what he'd do to clean is just what I did with the new 223 barrel recently. Started with great groups, then they opened up with the same loads. Hmmmm, so I cleaned it and super accuracy was back. And it does seem that required cleaning bouts are fewer and farther between, as I shoot it.

As for JB paste, I've used it in the past, but don't anymore. I use Shooter's Choice, that being a minor preference over Butch's Bore Shine. And with the new smooooth bores in the fancy barrels, I continue to be amazed at how little effort (and patches) are needed to clean the bore. If a fellow has a lot of rifles and no custom aftermarket barrels, I warn them to not get the first one. That will lead to the second one and he will rarely ever be pleased with a 'regular old factory barrel).
