What scope do you have? And what reticle does it have?

That is your problem of why you can not learn it. Mils and inches are two complete different things. If I shoot at a target and I am low, I look in the scope and my reticle will show me I am 4 mils low so I adjust the scope four mils.

I am sure Jason can explain it better you might want to have a mod move this to the optic section.

First think you need tondo is forget everything you know about inches, stop thinking in 1/4 in clicks and the such. 1 mil is 3.14 inches or pi(my phone doesn't have the symbol). As Walter said, you now measure and adjust your scope in mils. If you turn your turret 1 mil, then you are turning it 3.14 inches. If you have .1 mil increment then 1 click is .314 inches or 1/10 mil. I'm not a good teacher, get with Fireman JG, he can explain it better.

Here's a good video on the subject from the National Shooting Sports Foundation.

1 mil is 3.6 in at 100. But not that it matters, think in mils not inches

Don't be concerned with how many inches low you are. If equipped, use your reticle with mil markings to determine how far off your shot was and adjust accordingly.

Why was I not notified? grin

Center of your reticle to the first dot, diamond, large hash is 1.0 Mil in each direction. Stop there.

1.0 Mil is 1 yard vertical at 1000 yards horizontal, 1" at 1000", 1 m at 1000 m. It is a trig function, so angular, not linear. If we sat a 55 gallon drum at 1000 yards it would measure 1.0 Mil tall in the reticle since it is a yard tall. Move the drum to 500 yards and it would be 2.0 Mils in the reticle, move it to 100 yards and it would be 10.0 Mils in the reticle. (I draw pictures on the board for students at my range, words only go so far)

So at 100 yards 1.0 Mil is 1.0 Mil, same as 1000 yards. It is a cone. At 100 yards it is 1/10 of a yard, 3.6", at 500 yards it is 1/2 a yard, 18". But you have to throw inches out the window. Weather at 100, 500, or 1000 yards you scope "sees" in Mils so you measure in Mils. You see a miss .5 Mil low, dial or hold .5 Mil higher than that last shot, plain and simple.

Where this gets way easier is in the ballistic calculator. Plug in your bullet's BC, MV, weight, and zero distance and tell it to give you trajectory in Mils. That is what it will do. Shoot the rifle at 100 yards. Say your first shot is .3 Mil high (as you can see in the reticle) and .5 Mil right. Dial the elevation down .3 Mil and the windage left .5 Mil. All things working perfectly including shooter and equipment, then the next shot should be a perfect center shot. Loosen the turret screws, rotate the turrets to "0" and tighten the turret screws. Now the rifle, scope and turrets are zeroed.

So lets say you're shooting a 6.5 Creedmoor with a 140 gr. A-max @2800 fps MV.

The calculator will give you trajectory in Mils.

200 yards up .4 (dial to .4 Mil)
300 yards up 1.0 (dial to the number 1 on the turret)
400 yards up 1.8 (dial 8/10's more elevation to 1.8)
500 yards up 2.6
600 yards up 3.6
700 yards up 4.7

If all the data is true going in it will give you good data out. jbmballistics.com is reliable and free.

Thos values can also be held for corrections. So the 300 yard shot (elevation turret still on "0") hold over to the first 1.0 Mil dot, hash, diamond, whatever is in the reticle. Hold the same values for the rest of the chart. The trick is holding elevation and wind simultaneouly. Dialing elevation and holding wind is the best method. You get to stay on the windage line and have a ruler to lined up through the center of the target.

Let me know if I can further help.
